Subject: Shortening axle to tuck 20s IP: Logged
Message: Just wondering how hard it would be to do. My buddy has a machine shop and says he would attempt doing it for me. Where should he cut it? and is it possible for him to do it or do you need some kind of special equip? Just looking for any tips before we attempt it. btw its for a 8.25 of a 2000 dak.
Thanks,
Ryan

Message: You need to have an axle shop make this for you. First, completely disassemble the axle. Then the axle tubes must be pressed out & cut shorter. Then custom axles must be made from scratch since it's hardened steel.
Option 2: Flare the sides of the bed to make the tires fit. You're probably tubbing the body anyway, right? Much cheaper than a custom axle, and give the body a different look, and be stock reliable.

Message: if you are gonna spend the money on some 20" wheels... you might as well make the wheel tuck under the truck and not the truck fit over the wheel.
It can be done... my buddy here just ordered a set of 20" to tuck when he bags it. I dont know the specifics but i'll get them to you if you want. I also know of another dakota in the area that is body dropped and bagged... he tucks 18" front and 20" rear.

Message: Thanks for the reply intense if you could let me know the offset of these rims. Problem is I already have 20s and would like to keep them if possible.
Thanks

Message: well... it may just be cheaper to sell those and buy new ones because most aftermarket axles cost in the $2k-3K range... and having something custom like that would probably cost ya even more.
i'll ask him today if i can get ahold of him.
