Subject: Rubbing problems IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 V6 CC sport. I put on a DJM 2/3 kit. The front is lowered via new control arms and the read with shackles.
I lowered the tire size down to a 235/60/R16 - which leaves me about 2"s of clearance [from outside edge of tire to lip of fender].
Now I mainly drive this thing around town and never have any problems. But when I hit the highway and come past a good whipdy-doo I get some good rubbing. It has gotton to the point where some of the plastic fasteners that hold my flares in place are getting ground off, as well as leaving some nasty lacerations on my tires.
My shocks are Doetch Tech (sp?). I am using the bump stops that came with my kit.
Any help would be appreciated in resolving this.

Message: Ok I did some searching through these forums and found that you are supposed to measer the gap between your fender lip and tire - and then compare that value to the bump stop to the metal.
Ok here is what I found:
fender lip and tire - almost 2"s
bump stop to the metal - almost 2"s.
Now I took it to les swhab tires after I made this determination and they said that it would be difficult to get a taller bump stop because of something in the way.
Here is my question: Do you know what that tire worker may have been saying? I looked under there and did not see any reason why I could not put a taller bump stop in.
Also if I do go a taller bump stop what size should I use? 2.5's? that would leave me 1.5"s of clearance...is that ok?
Thanks guys.

Message: hey man. I had the same problem. Any dip i hit ate away my tires. I had to put new taller bump stops which sit about .5 an inch from the upper part it hits. MUCH BETTER. Id rather hit the stops than get another set of new tires up front.. =/

Message: So did the bump stops fix the problem? I am haveing the same problem and all I did were 3" drop block rear, and 2" drop coils front. And when going over a dip at 50mph it lacerates my tire just like you said. If the problem was fixed with new bump stops what size did you use?

I'll help out though. The bump stops DJM provides are garbage, you would have to be rollin' on 13's with low pros for them to work.
I have a 3/5 with 275/45/20 tires(too big for a 3/5 for sure)
I torched off my factory stops from the factory arms, welded a bolt onto them, and screwed them into place. I ride the bump stops and still get rubbing(only in dramatic south texas situations)
But, it did wonders for highway driving and all that snazz. Even the ride was better than before the drop. :)

Message: I am throwing around ideas for the front caster angle or camber. (not toe in but lean)
I have a 2001 Dak Sport 4.7 5 spd.... 2" coils up front and the top of the tire leans in about .5" more than the bottom.
A good question would be on the topic of machining the mount holes that are apparently already adjustable according to the alignment shop I took it to and making the top arms capable of sliding on the mounting bolt outward by maybe between 3/8 - 5/8 more than present by cutting the hole for the bolt longer than it presently is.
Any thoughts on this? My tires are wearing BAD on the insides due to this, but this sucker sure does handle well for a truck.
BTW- 255/50/16 is my usual tire choice after the drop.
Thanks for any input out there.
