Subject: easiest way to lower?
IP: Logged

Message:
i was wondering the easiest and most comfortable ride would be achieved by using what components?
i want a 3/5 drop. would i use coils up front, then shackles and hangers in the rear? or coils up front, then shackles and blocks in the rear? are the hangers hard to install? whats involved in the installation of these? would the blocks give me a bumpy ride? which is easiest, best ride?
thanks
steve

Contact Hotchkis performance on the web and check out what they have. They are probably the most expensive, but probably the easiest and best ride.

They use coils up front and new leaf springs in the back.

If you have to install new hangers/shackle mounts, they are a PITA!

I have heard from people that the hotchkis suspencion has a harsh ride to it, because of the dearched leafsprings. the front coils and the leafsprings are built for cornering not for ride comfort.
steveo, do you want a good ride or save money?

Easiest way to lower a Dak is letting the air out of the tires. Ride isn't worth a $hit ... but sure goes good off road!!

hehehe....sorry.

well thanks for getting off topic and not helping me whatsoever, this is a board for lowered dakotas, am i right? i dont go to the raised dakotas forum and give you nonsense answers do i? well anyway thanks josh and eric. i would like to compromise, and get the best ride, without spending the most money. in other words i would like to spend around 250-280 and was wondering what the easiest way to drop it myself doing the install and would like the most comfortable ride.

The easiest way would be to heat the coils and use blocks in the rear.

The best way would be to use Hotchkis. They only have a 2/3 kit though and you should be able to pick it up for around $1000.

Your best bet is probably someone like Belltech. They sell a 2/4 drop for $240 in Summit including shocks. It is right in the middle of the above two choices.

I will reccomend from personal experience, go with the control arms up front. When I bought my kit, I got just the springs for the 3" drop, problem is they never settled and my front was higher than my back end. Yes, I did make sure that the coils were for the V6 and not the 8. Just my 3.9cents

I just put the Hotchkis springs and Bilstein shocks on my truck last week. Got a 2/3 drop. NOT the cheapest or the easiest. But for handling it's a good ride. Yes the ride is firmer, but the Bilsteins modulate quite well. Ride is comparable to my Camaro SS. (Also with Bilsteins) The Bilsteins are quite expensive, but they are worth it. Some people get the Hotchkis without the Bilsteins. I think most of the harsh ride complaints come from that side.

Swapping springs is easier than replacing control arms up front. Blocks are easier than replacing springs out back. (I personnally don't care for the look of springs hanging close to the ground.)

More Comfortable (read that as softer ride) will come from Control Arms and Blocks.

In the end it depends on your preference. Good Luck!

Does my Dag have a block lift?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a black 98 Dakota sport 3.9 regular cab 2wd. It has big 10 1/2 X 31inch Goodyears with 15 inch rims. It looks like a 4x4. Its seems to set
alot higher then most 2x2 dags in the back. Did my dag come with some sort of lift from D/C?
I want to use some smaller street tires like
the goodyear eagle 225x55x15 and would like to
lowwer the dag 2 inches in the back. So what would
be the best way to do this?

The easiest way I found to give my 96 dakota a
2/(2-6)drop was heat the front coils and flip the rear hangers, put some wedges to align rear axle. Top that of with air shocks. Drops between 2 to 6 inches (at your will) with air shocks . Total expense I got it for was:

$150 for heating, shocks, alignment, and wedges
and about 6 hours of labor.

Rides bumpy but handles great.

I am hopeing nobody hits the reserve price actually. I was going to be moving cross-country, and I have two other cars already. That plus a UHAUL would be impossible with my truck. But the plans just changed and I am staying. Can't pull the auction because someone already bid. Hopefully in the 2 days left it doesn't meet reserve!! I'd hate to lose my baby now!!

Chuy I also have a 96'3.9 dak and would like to drop it. With that setup is it possible to go lower like 3"front 4" back. Also if I bought new shocks for the back would it help the ride. The blocks on the back they make a kit that comes from Autozone. could I just use those or would I have to order them online. Where do I go to get my springs heated, does that make the ride a lot harder.Thank you!
