good luck man ive been asking for weeks and the only replys i get are crap but i think u might be able to use de-arched leaf springs to lower the back and the front u would have to screw around with the torsion bars but im not sure how to do all of that crap

hate to tell ya man, but everyone around here looks at this as a joke. i been lookin to drop my 87 4wd about 3/3 or so. with no luck ofcourse.

i dont know much about the gen 3s so i cant help other than you could crank the torsions down in the front about 2 inches.

why in God's name would you want to lower a 4x4? and still be able to use the 4wd, you negate ground clearance by lowering it.

Just bought a 98 dak and want to lower it right, using Western Chassis a-arms. Is there any other source besides sporttruckdirect.com? They want $50 shipping.

I only need the 4x4 for the winter time. I don't go off roading so I'm really not all that concerned about the ground clearance. Which is why I asked for advice on "lowering" in the first place 7orp0r!! So, if you don't have any usefull info on my Q, type your opinions elsewhere.

I posted on this similar question a while back.
You can lower a dakota 4x4 but not a whole lot. you cant slam it like a 2 wheel drive.
Basically you can lower the front 1-2 inches by decreasing the preload on the torsion bars. Personally i wouldnt go lower than 1 inch. then get soem stiffer shocks than the stock ones.
and realign it.

for the rear there are 2 ways to do it. one is more expensive than the other.
1. you can have a shop move the rear springs under the axle. what they need to do is weld a new spring perch under the axle ( like a 2 wheel drive) and get different shocks. youll also need to make sure the brake lines and e brake cables are routed right. shouldnt be a problem as long as the tech knows what he is doing.

2 you can have your springs dearched or remove the overloads. that will drop it but youll have a softer ride in the back
you can have a shop make you spings. I use deavers in santa ana california. those guys are the best IMO.

for the rear I would go with the leaf under axle. gives a good 3 inch drop and you wont have to c notch the frame since 2 wheel drives have the same set up. look at a 2 wheel drive dakota and youll see. Look at either a RT dakota or a 4x4 durango and thats what youre looking to do to your 4x4.

mabey im oversimplyifying it but I did a buddys 4x4 like that. we found a wrecked RT and took the axle and rear suspension and put it on his truck ( we used his springs though) If I rememember right it was pretty much a bolt on.
He goes in the snow ( hes a snowboarder) but he wanted a truck but never goes off road so he didnt need the ground clearance. Perosnally I wouldnt do it ( only because I need the ground clearance and I tow a lot and carry stuff but I dotn have a problem with someone lowering their 4x4 to get better handling. Especially if they never take it off road.
some people say its lame to lower a 4x4. I say why. I think its lame to sink 30 K in mods on a truck AFTER you buy it. Its all in the owners choice so do what you wanna do. hell I like my truck. I wont add a 5 000 $ stereo system in it cause I dont really want to spend my $4 like that. But thats just me

not sure dude...

the rear would be easy. you could flip the axle to over top of the springs, then you wouldnt need bags with as much travel, but if you want the 4wd ground clearance, flippin wouldnt be a good choice. just weld the mounts for the bags on the frame and axle and run the lines and compressor.

for the front, you prolly wouldnt have the travel you are looking for since the axle half shafts are there. they will prolly hit the the bottom of the frame, and you wont get the full effects of the bags. remember 2wd has spindles and springs, we have torsions and halfshafts, which limit the suspension travel. even if you could get the full drop, the stress on the ball joints and axle joints would be too great and theyd wear out almost instantly i would think. also the stress angle on the shafts could cause them to bend possibly(???). think about how the shafts would be with it completely lowered.

and the a arms would be twisted up real far too.

also, the bags would have to be mounted to the torsions and cantalievered(sp) to work correctly. they cant be on the A arms because the half shafts run through the center of them.

dont quote me tho. ive never seen this before. (i have thought about it tho, and came up with this) best thing i could tell you is to talk to a shop or 2 or how every many it takes to get an answer.

good luck
steve

ps. i had a pic of a drawing of this but can get it to work.
ill keep tryin to
