Message:
If I drop my 01' quad cab Dakota with 2" coils in the front and a 3" block in the back, would I need new shocks? If so, how do I know what size to buy?

I'm also conisdering a 1/2 drop if the 2/3 effects the suspension too much.

Input is appreciated!!! By the way, I'm on 18" Enkei RT6's.

I've done both 1/2 and 2/3 drops in the past. The big thing isn't really how much you're dropping it, but HOW you're dropping it. My 2/3 drop was with spindles and blocks...these DO NOT change suspension geometry, so you don't need shorter shocks.

If you drop your front 2 inches with springs you'll need shorter shocks because you're shortening the length between your upper and lower shock mounts..ie your geometry has changed. I'd just call Summitt or whoever and ask what they'd recommend for a 2" drop...I'm guessing a 2" shorter shock.

If you do blocks, you won't need shorter shocks in the back.

FYI, although a 1" drop spring will change your geometry, you probably don't need shorter shocks for this small of a change...2" coils would be a different story, IMO.

Sean

how about if you put lower control arms and coils. Would the coils change the geometry, but the arms would drop the whole setup? im wondering, because i want to get some bilstien shocks for the 2" coils, but i dont want the control arms to compress them even more.

If you went with LCAs that drop you, say 2", and 2" coils, your geometry would be affected by 2". From what I understand, in most cases control arms move the spring perch to a lower location that results in a drop w/o affecting geometry.

So, if you run both LCAs and 2" coils, only the coils will affect your geometry. So if you're getting Bilsteins sized for a 2" drop coil, the LCAs won't throw anything off...you'll be in good shape.
