Subject: suspension advise please IP: Logged
Message: Hello all,
I have a 03 CC dak with the stampede package and the 4.7. Today I had the rear lowered two inches by using drop shackles. The truck now sits parallel to the ground. It looks great and the ride only changed a little.
This is my question. The rear seems a little more firm which is fine. The front now seems a little soft. Would changing the front shocks help to even out the firmness? How about the rear shocks.
The side to side motion, yaw I think it is called seems to be a little firm also. Overall, I am pleased with the mod, I am just seeking information on how to fine tune the truck.
Thank you for your advise...

Message: well, all i can say is with the shocks. the back is gonna ride a little firmer, because: when u drop the truck, the shocks are more compressed; they get stiffer the more compressed they are.
the front probably aren't any softer than before, they just seem that way compared to the rear.
(my truck is THE perfect example of this: the rear are compressed so its stiff as hell! the front is loose as a ten-dollar... u know, cuz they're not compressed enuff.)
hope this helps. peace

Message: Thanks for the reply Dan.
Do you think that going to a slightly stiffer shock in the front would even the firmness out?
The ride is ok now but I am a tinkerer as my wife calls me. I am actually thinking of taking the front down an inch or two.
How did you drop yours?
Thanks for the response...

Message: Well, if you're thinking about droping the front too, i'd just get some lowered shocks. They take into consideration the lowered stance, and give a nice ride at a lowered height.
It'll be much easier than trying to toy with the stock shocks, or just keeping them with the regular drop. I'd get new ones.
As for the front drop, i used coils. That's probably your best bet for dropping the front. Not much difference in ride quality, and relatively cheap.

Message: A lot of people don't get the full drop up front when you use coils. If you want the full 3 inches, you could go with control arms..

Message: well, if u just want to even out the firmness of the ride, u might just go with some drop shocks for the back.
The thing is... it depends on the shocks. the companies that make the drop shocks use the same shock for different drops: For example, they usually use the exact same shock for a stock height, 1" drop, 2", (or maybe even 3").
So, that shock is gonna ride smoother for the stock height than it will with your 2" drop; It may still be stiff (or stiffer). That's why people may have different experiences with the same shocks, if they have different drops.
SO... if you can find a drop shock that covers trucks with a 2" drop or more, it should be as smooth as the front. OR, there may be some expensive ($90) performance shocks u can get for the front to stiffen it up. i guess that's it. hope it helps.

Message: oh, and u could most likely make it evenly firm by dropping the front with 1 or 2" drop coils, and the stock shocks; but then u wont have that even, parallel to ground look u wanted.
and you can see my truck and how i lowered it at:

Message: Thanks guys for your advice. Would a two inch drop in the rear require a new front end alignment?
I hear talk of the RT coils. Will these lower the front of a Stampede any?
Thanks again...

Message: I'm pretty sure a rear drop doesn't mess with the front alignment; i dont know if the stampede package is dropped, so dont know about the RT springs.

Message: dropping the rear DOES affect the front alignment but not that much. I am not a front end guy but I remember having another truck dropped and was told its a caster adjustment that needs to be made.... If I remeber right,....that was about 8 years ago so don't hold me to it.
