Subject: camber all messed up IP: Logged
Message: i ust put on 3 inch djm c arms and the wheels are cambered in like no other. how can i fix this. no alignment shop will touch it around me since it is too low. i also wondered how long the wheel bearings will last while driving like this? the alignment isnt too bad so if the is a way to fix the camber that would be great.

Message: Have you tried adjusting it all the way out by yourself to see if it can be corrected? I know it won't be computer aligned but you can eye-ball it for a better and longer-lasting tire life.

Message: email DJM...there is a way to fix it, but it
involves drilling out some holes (1/4" longer)
in the upper control arms for more
adjustment. good luck.

Message: Yeah, like I mentioned in the last post....loosen the nuts till they are real loose (not all the way off)....if you don't have the weight off the wheel and tire, the weight of the truck will make it camber in real bad cause of center of gravity. Jack it up to remove the weight and then loosen the nuts and then grab the bottom of the tire in like one of them wwf bear hugs and pull back toward you. When you are at the end of the factory slot thats all you can get unless you ream it out more with a bit like D said. The nuts aren't actually on the arm but on the bar running horizontal right under it.

Message: yeh those 3" djm arms do create alot of negative camber. just like was allready said, just jack the thing up to unload the suspension and loosen the upper control arm bolts, the camber will fall out on its own. when you do this you will also change your caster settings, but caster is an indirect tire wearing angle so its better to have your camber as straight as possible. i have the djm 3/5 drop on my 00, but luckily i am an alignment tech. i could only get mine out to 1.5 degrees negative but thats cool enough for me. once you get the camber as far out as you can take it to an alignmen tshop and have them simply set your toe (toe is the #1 tire wearing angle) if you are worried about inside edge wear still, you can have them set for a minor toe in (positive) +.07-+.12 over the factory alignment spec. this will help by taking some of the load off fof the inside edge from the negative camber and smooth it out a little hope this helps a little.

Message: it'll be ok to drive but it will probably want to pull to the side with the lower camber. did they let them drop all the way out? or did they try to set the caster and not worry about the camber? the camber shouldnt hurt your wheel bearings especially with the offset wheels that daks use.

Message: Maybe he's thinking balljoints Joe, cause I can't see it harming the wheel bearings a whole hella lot. Also on my previous post I made a mistake. You should push on the bottom of the tire. If you want to hug and pull do that at the top. That will bring the camber back out. Sorry for the el typo.

Message: cool ok im gonna try this tomorrow! Does it have to be jacked up even on both sides or no.
Also are those nuts on the top of the upper control arms? You can see them from looking through the engine bay right? I think I know what your talkin about!

| Same prob with 01 Dak.... IP: Logged
Message: I am wondering the same thing.
I installed 2" springtech coils and then had it aligned (01 Dak CC 4.7 Sport) and the guy said it was in fact adjustable for the lean in or camber, but that was all he could get out of it.
I swear the top of the tire sits in almost an inch farther than the bottom.
It doesn't look like you can drill on the upper control arm mounts just from a quick look, but hopefully I'm wrong.
Any help?? The tires aren't lasting long and I want to fix this before I get new wheels and tires for sure!
Thanks,
Matt

Message: Matt, with only a 2" drop in the front and you are still using your stock lower C arms, there shouldnt be an issue with a good alignment shop being able to align it properly. Do you have the specs from when the alignment was done? And also you should not have to grind out the upper slots, there is plenty of adjustment there!!! Check those specs and see if they actually tried to change them!! I know that I cringe when I have to aligna dakota at work, it can be a pain in the a**!! Good luck!!

| Well, that seems right now.... IP: Logged
Message: I actually had to pull them back in after pulling them all the way out to the end of the slots after cutting them out 1/4".....
It's looking like only 1/8" would've been perfect.
It's still hard to tell by just looking as it's almost impossible to find a perfectly level surface to check them on.
The guy at the Moore & Patron shop lied to me and said that he had them all the way out.
I would be taking it back to them, but that was in Little Rock, and I'm in Kansas now. I should probably still call them and speak with their manager to let him know and try to get him to cover the cost of all the tires I wore out prematurely and another alignment as most shops wont adjust it for less than $50.....
Thats a real shame I paid that much and they still screwed me over.
I can get a reading for $20 and then do it myself fairly easily though, so that's what I might do.

Message: You don't have to replace the whole hub if your
wheel bearing goes. Remove the large snap-ring
that holds the bearing in the hub. Support the
hub by the stud flange and drive the double tapered roller bearing assmbly out with a press or hammer and a brass drift. Once you have it in
your hand you can then find the little numbers
on the bearing just like any wheel bearing. In
my 99 they were Timken jrm 4249a about $35 at
a local commercial bearing distributor. You
won't find this fix in any book or manual but
I know it works as I did it. have fun
