I am lowering my 99 dakota v6 with a new set of control arms in the front. to get the old ones out, i have to get the balljoint out. every other link to the control arm is removed. the only thing that is holding it on is the balljoint. my new control arms have new balljoints, so anything will help! thanks

u need a ball joint seperator; it's a BIG 2 prong fork- type thing. u wedge it in a little, and bang it in with a hammer till the joint pops loose. hmmm... i guess it kinda looks like this: ======<
hope that helps :). Peace

Dan is right, you really need that tool. In some places, they call it a pickle splitter, or a ball joint separator. You can get one at an auto parts store, such as Advance Auto (I got mine there), and they will run you about $10. Makes it a lot easier, however I used it to pop out the top balljoint, the bottom one would not budge, but you just need one or the other out. Be careful that you either have the rotor assemble supported, or everything out of the way, cause it flies down kinda hard when you knock the balljoint out. Good luck.

i have looked all over the place for a ball joint sepearator that is big enough to seperate the lower contol arm. no luck. the biggest one i could find is about 1 1/4" and my balljoint is about 1 1/2". has anyone else had this problem? also, i got advice from a pretty qualified guy and he said that if you just knock where it attaches to the spindle with a sledge hammer, the vibration will pop the balljoint out. my truck is sitting in the garage right now, so if you could post asap, it would be appreciated. THANKS!

Am I to understand your new lowering lower control arm did not come with the ball joint already installed? Most brands do.

If you are merely replacing the lower control arm you shouldn't need to remove the ball joint from the control arm, just from the spindle where it is held on by what I think is a crown nut.

I've disassembled my '95 front suspension many times over and have learned a few do's and don'ts.

Such as...if you do any hammering on the ball joint nut to knock it loose from the spindle, use a block of wood or something like it such that you don't damage the thread on the bolt. But, if you don't ever plan on using that ball joint again... never mind!

Zach.... thats true.... I seen one guy pop a set off the same way. He put a pry bar inbetween the ball joint and the arm for a little pressure and just kept crackin around the arm till it fell out. Didn't believe it till I seen it. I personally like using the pickle forks but the arms are shape funny enough that you can't chock up enough on the ball joint unless you screw up the boot or grind a corner off the fork

Luku... a better way to crack on top of the ball joint is to put the castle nut back on just enough to get 3 threads on and crack the castle nut itself. Its more of a solid hit than wood
