Subject: I think I have a big problem!! IP: Logged
Message: Here's my problem guys, and i'm hoping some of you can help.. I have western chasis lower control arms, and I noticed when i got my last oil change that they were cracked a little. Now the problem i have is when i apply the brake hard my front end makes a clunk noise, and the alignment shifts to the left, then when i reverse to the right, it clunks again and my alignment shifts back.. I think i have a major problem, wat do you guys think??? If i can't solve the problem I am going to go with a new front end drop.. any suggestions..
thanks in advance,
Mike

Message: It sounds like your upper control arm is loose. The upper arm has slide adjustment on it so that the camber can be adjusted when the truck is aligned. If your truck has been aligned since you've owned it because of lowering or whatever it's possible that it wasn't tightened enough and worked itself loose. This would cause the camber to change and make it "pull" one direction when accelerating and the other when braking. If this is the case you should get it to a shop quick before the bolt falls out and the upper arm falls off. As far as shady lower control arms, your on your own with that one, remeber that you get what you pay for. Good luck!

Message: I dont really know names so i couldn't tell you where exactly, but just think of the control arms as your whole arm.. It cracked right at the wrist, in between the arm and the hand.. lol..
Use your imagination!!!

Message: Did you buy them from Sport truck direct?I believe Western Chassis has a lifetime warranty, so you could probably call Sporttruck direct and send it back to them for a new one. This happened to me too, but I just welded the crack back up and reinforced it on both sides.

Message: Well... I don't know about DJM... I just broke thier rear shackle brackets last week. Then again, I just it all depends on how abusive you are with it. I haven't had any problems out of my Western arms.

Message: THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE UPPER CONTROL ARMS AS STATED ABOVE !!
I had the same problem when I did my 3/5 drop. I had the exact clunk. Turns out one of the bolts on the upper arm was just a little loose and caused the arm to pivot. If you look at the bottom of the bolts that hold the upper arm to the frame you will see some U shaped peices of metal that are supposed to keep the bolt head from turning. Problem is that they turn a little when you tourque the nut onto the bolt and they ride up the side of the arm a alittle. I had to get 2 long extensions and a large breaker bar to tighten those babies up ! It will all make more sense after you look at the bolts :)
Just be sure to get an alignment afterword !

Message: I have a 3/5 on my 02 quad cab and when i go in or out of a driveway at an angle it makes this poping noise. I have no clue what it is. Has anyone had this problem? If so how did you fix it? I have the DJM 3" control arms and 5" shackle/hanger with toxic shocks.

Message: that sounds like either your balljoints popping (if it comes from the front) or your bed mounts popping... which is very common in dakotas.

Message: mine also does that. mine makes a big "clunk" noise when i'm driving and make right turns. the noise comes from the rear of the truck. i'm not sure what the hell it is. it doesnt really bother me though.

Message: Mine has the clunk when I hit some bumps with the right side, and during certain turns where the suspension moves up and down while turning into the driveway.
I also would like to correct the camber problem to save my tires.
Has anyone been able to get the camber to nearly straight up and down after a 2" drop with coils with just the factory adjustments, or have you had to lengthen the adjustment slots?
Thanks for any help. Buying tires sucks.

Message: Matt, you have to lengthen the holes about 1/2 inch to get everything aligned right with a 2 inch drop.

Message: Got R Done.
It only took 1/4" approx. and now my tires are actually leaning outward a few degrees, so it was more than enough.
I did it with a cut-off tool, as it's fairly difficult to get in there with anything else.
I assume the bushing on the right side wears out faster than the left due to the heat from the exhaust being much closer for some stupid engineer's reason. He he
Thanks for the help anyhow.
