Subject: i need some help on changing balljoints IP: Logged
Message: Hi there, i know that the balljoints question comes up all the time and people probably get sick of answering it, but it is time for me to replace my upper balljoints and i just want to make sure i do it right. What steps do i need to take?? Ive heard people talk about having to use a spring compressor, but is that true?? I know i have to grind out the rivets, but how do i get the balljoint assembly seperated from the rest of the suspension. Can i just put the truck on jack stands and hammer the control arm up the a rubber mallet so it seperates, or will the spring cause it to shoot up to fast?? Sorry for all the questions, i just dont want to wreck something else on my truck while doing them!

Message: Grant, after removing the wheels and getting the truck on jack stands, put a floor jack under the lower control arm and raise it until the control arm is about parallel with the floor. Then use a pickle fork tool to seperate the spindle from the upper ball joint. As long as you keep the floor jack under the lower control with enough pressure on it, you won't have any problem with the spring coming out. Then start grinding away. You might have to drill out the rivets after you grind away the head. Let me know if you got any other questions.
