Subject: New Control arms=New ball joints IP: Logged
Message: OK I got the western chassis 2 inch drop control arms and I went to go get my drop installed today and they said that I'm gonna need new lower ball joints because of the rivets! What are my options here when it comes to installing these! Couldnt I just drill the rivets and keep the same ball joints??? Or if I keep the rivets in like they say would I need new ball joints??
Thanks for the help!!!!!

Message: I think if you lift the truck up on a jack and grab the top and bottom of the tire and try moving it! if it moves you need new ones if no movement your good! I think thats what i read on here before!

Message: DrewzR/T,
You might want to check with Western Chassis about what part number new ball joints would be. I've got DJM lower control arms, and DJM told me that I need to use ball joints meant for a Ford truck which are pressed on, whereas factory Dakota's are riveted on.

Message: to check your balljoints, you have to load them... ie, jack your truck up by the control arm... close to the balljoint.
Hold the tire at 12 and 6 oclock and shake up and down. Lots of movement means your balljoints may be shot.
They really don't make noise. Usually it'll be your wheel bearings makin something like a growling noise.

Message: I have a 99 Dakota 4x4 with 72,000 on it, The dealer said I need a new upper ball joint to get an inspection sticker. I asked how much for upper and lower both sides because if I do need a new ball joint, I might as well do all of them. I was told $1000.00 does that seem reasonable?

Message: If it's a dealer they are going to replace the entire assembly, not just the ball joint. If you knock out the old rivets you can use new Moog ball joins and you'll be all set for a lot cheaper.
