I have a 93 3.9 dakota x-cab 4x4. i ripped out a 318 out of a 74 dart and rebuilt it tuff. my question has been asked many of times will little luck in an answer. how can i make this swap? i'm still not to sure if the auto A-500 tranny and torque converter from the 3.9 will mount to the 74 318, and if not what auto tranny and converter will; and what trannies will mount up to my 93 transfer case also. I plan on going non computer all analog. is there a parts truck i should look out for like a 89 V8 dakota or some type of D100. something to make it a cheaper convertion. also are the motor mounts that bad to get costumized if needed on this swap. i'm only 20 and new to the morpar family your help would be much appreciated thank you for you time and knowledge. any added info on this swap is much appreciated.

Even if your A-500 does bolt up, which I doubt (but have nothing to base this on) it will not hold up to the torque of your 318. I put a 318 in my 95 dak (formerly v6) and the a500 blew apart within two weeks. I was driving it gently because I knew it wouldn't last long. The one time I stomped on it, I bent torque converter fins, broke a band and seized it to the drum and lost Reverse, 1st and 3rd gear.
Please take my advice and build up a 727 or something that will handle the v-8 power. I don't know enough about old school engines (i'm only 19) to know what will bolt up but the a-500 won't last long.
I now have a 46-rh in my truck and it is having no problem with my mildly built up 318. It used the same driveshaft, all I needed was a torque converter and a dipstick tube.

The a500 or 42re (same tranny except 42 is electronic) will bolt up to the 318. A 3.9L is a 318 with 2 cylinders cut off. I know that 318 Daks use a beefier verison of the 42re the 44re. I would probably look for a a500 that was behind a 318. You could probably get your a500 built to take the extra torque. Shouldn't cost too much to have that done. As for the torque converter, If the 3.9 is internally balanced, the torque con verter should work, but I would spend the money and get a 318 converter.

My 96 Dakota has the 42re (A500) and it handle the extra power just fine...
You can have your A500 built up to handle gobs of power...
Ron Merx's 10 second R/T has the 44RE(A500) in it...

Any A500 should bolt up to your transfer case. You will just have to remove the tail shaft if it is a two wheel drive. I would just take the tranny you have and put a decent shift kit in it. Transgo makes a very good one for the A500. If Tom's can handle what his 318 is putting out, I think you should be OK. Mine is a A500 and I'm running around 300 hp through it. The Shift kit makes all the difference. Just make sure they enlarge the feed holes to the torque converter and overdrive.

The most logical would be a 93. I forget what year they switched to the electronic tranny. Aim for a 95 or older and you should be ok. Just make sure you have the shift kit installed and they make sure there is adequate flow to the overdrive unit and the torque converter. Older A500 and A518 had a habit of burning up their od units from lack of fluid.

Actually a 91 would be the best parts truck. The 91 still had the pre magnum 318's in them. Probably the easiest to match up.

Yep. The 318 mag was introduced in 92 and the 360 mag was introduced a year later. I know as late as 1990 the heavy duty rams still used a three speed tranny on the 360's. Don't know how many fullsize trucks used the four speed trans. Regardless of the year, they all have the same bellhousing pattern. Just might be easier hooking up the carb linkage with the older design.

Sorry, haven't been around all weekend. The trannys will all match up as long as they were behind an A engine (273,318,340,360). That's one thing about Chrysler they didn't change a lot over the years. The blocks of the 5.2 and 5.9L date back to the mid sixties. Bolt pattern hasn't changed. As for the stall speed, I assume you will want a stock to slightly over stock for your 4WD (maybe in the 2000rpm range). As long as the tranny was in a 4wd they should match up. I still think you should use your current A500 unless it is whipped. Still might be cheaper to have it rebuilt than trying to match something up. That would save a lot of headaches. If you upgraded to a A518 you would have to get different driveshaft lengths.

the motor i rebuilt is a 74 318 LA engine and the tranny i have is a 42rh A-500 and it will not mount up because they just change the torque converter to electronic in the 93. what i want is a 518 like you said. but is the 518 non electronic and a overdrive and will it mount up to my 231 transfercase. also what other modifications should i look into. thankyou

i found v8 dodges with the right tranny but the transfercase yoke is on the right side not the left like mine. are the mounting bold pattern the same? can i use my case still? help

I seem to be getting slightly confused. Perhaps we can start from the beginning through the end all in one post. Here is my project, please advise what you recomend. I have a 1989 Dodge Dakota Convertible with the v6 and the four speed automatic transmission. My goal is to get rid of the 3.9 and move up to a 318. My transmission needs rebuilt right now, so I have several options which to use behind the 318. If I have to rebuild one any how, which is recommended. I want to have a reliable speedometer and tachometer reading as factory also. What will I need to do to acompish the swap in the electronics under the hood to keep it all looking and operating correctly? Thanks for your help.

Seems like to me it might. Unless you need a bell house that fits to a v8. I think there about the same. Both 318 and 239 mopar engines use the same parts. The Tourqe converter might be a concern. Or you could just spend more money and buy a 518 to hook up the engine your going to swap/

so the 91 tranny should do the trick. it will hold up to the power if i get a shift kit and a tranny cooler yes? or would it be better with a 90 or 91 518 tranny and will the 518 bolt up to the 93 dakota transfercase thank you.
