Subject: Torque Spec. for Rad. Support/Frame bolt
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone know the torque spec. for the long bolt that connects the lower radiator support bar to the frame. In between them is a bushing. The bolt is a 12x1.75, I am not sure of it's grade, but it's a heavier one.

The factory service manual does not have it listed, nor does it have a rating for 12x1.75 in the torque references.

Thanks!

You normaly only get specific torque spec.s for parts that have a very narrow window for safe operation. If you must have a torque spec then assume if it is not marked that it is a grade 4 and it is probably going to fall between 19-35 lbs-ft. But make sure you look it up I am just guessing from experince.

Yeah, I figured it's going to be in a range, but I have no idea what that range is.

I found it's grade though, it's a 10.9. This is for the frame remember, anything on a frame is usually always higher than grade 5.

I looked for other torque charts online and I was able to get approx. where I need to torque a bolt to for a grade 10.9 12mmx1.75mm pitch bolt. It turns out I was fairly close to my original guess. I got around 75 average for this bolt in different calculations and conversions online. I had guesses 70 ft. lbs..

Damn you service manual.

A bolt is tightest when it's 1/4 turn from stripping.

Tighten the bolt 'till it strips then back it off a 1/4 turn.

I must admit I'm impressed at your attention to detail. In the aerospace business we have a torqe calculator which takes into account bolt material/type/grade and application.

I have the torque specification chart for a 2001 QC from Alldatadiy.com. I don't see 12 x 1.75 listed (are you sure it's not 12 x 1.25? ) if you want the cart anyway email me... ecallenil@hotmail.com

eallen, I am positive it's a 12x1.75. I thought I must have misread the pitch guage and went back and checked it a second and third time. The 1.25 didn't fit, but the 1.75 was perfect match. It fit where there wasn't bit maybe a pinhole of light coming through against the root diameter and guage.

Must be a bastard thread of DC's. I hate those.

No worries about the chart. Thank you for the offer. I found some neat charts online that tell me the type of materials the different grades are made of -- I have more than I need, heh.

Thank you all for at least giving me a response. :)
