 Subject: Any 2wd steering play?

I have a 1990 2wd. They steering is lousy. I mean it gets me around but it is really loose and has alot of play. I can move my steering wheel approx 2in either direction before the tires catch and go. What gives?
My rack and pinion steering is stock. I also have 5in of lift with 31x10.50s. But had the same problem before lifting and newer tires.
Are there any steering stabilazers for 2wd's. Or could I possibly convert my R/P to a worm/sector or what ever the 4x4 daks have?
