Message: i have a 98 dakota that's not starting. I checked my battery with a meter... it's fine. I don't hear any clicking. Just the dash lights come on, the headlights work. I was just gonna take the starter off and take it to a shop to have it tested. This sounds so stupid... i can't get it off. How do you get to the bolt on top released(the bolts go horizontally and i cant get anything around the starter to the one on top). Or any other suggestions?

Message: Try a long extension with a swivel on the end for the socket. It worked for me.

Message: Connect the voltmeter and have someone turn the key to start. See what voltage drop you get. Just b/c the battery shows 12 or 13 volts does not mean it's good. Turn on your lights and see if you can still honk the horn. Try a few things before taking the starter off.

Message: He's right. The horn is the best way to check your battery. Your lights may work but the horn draws the most juice by far.
