Message: I have the opportunity to buy a 1987 Dakota with 135k on the odometer. They say it runs good, has new brakes, water pump, and therm. They also say it gets 25 mpg. No rust, but interior needs cleaned. They are asking $1,000. Is this a good deal?

Message: I've got an 87, and it don't get anywhere near 25 mpg. I get 15-17 with mine. I don't think you'll get 25 mpg, at least with the 3.9L. If it has the 2.5L, it's possible to get 25mpg if it's 2wd. But 1000 bucks is a good buy, I'd say take it, its a good all around truck.

Message: I have a 90 Dakota with the 2.5 engine. It has 178,000 miles on it. It gets 20 to 25 mpg on the highway. This has the original motor. On one road trip a few years ago I got just over 30 mpg, went 416 miles between fills, and still had over a gallon in the tank. I just had an estimate on mine for insurance purposes and they said $700. I have a nasty dent in the drivers side door, hail damage on the hood and only about half of the original paint is left. So I would say $1000 for the 87 would be fair. My 90 was $8900 new.

I have a 1989 and I love it. With all the mods I get around 18 mpg on my 3.9L V6 EFI 4x4.

Message: This sounds like a steal charlie i recently bought a 88 4*4 3.9 for 300.00 replaced the dist. front fender and all the usuall old truck stuff. Had a 98s-10 guttless wonder and cheap build quility my dakota is 10 times the truck that s-10 could hope to be. As far as parts and mods for the 87@88 your's being the simpler of the two thier is actually alot out thier. Try summit racing, advanced auto parts and jc whitney.
