Subject: Oil System Probs ? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys this is my first message. I wish it could have been about something happier than this. My 98' Dak Sport V6 has been great to me this past year since i got it in March. All of a sudden this past Sunday when I was driving back from town my oil gauge went from 45ish to 0. It scared me so I pulled over for a min or two. I cranked it back up and the gauge said around 45psi again. I drove a couple of miles more and it repeated. I did the stop and go routine untill i got home. Monday I took it to the shop they hooked it up to a machine and let it run for about an hour. The oil pressure stayed consistant. They called me and told me there didn't seem to be any problems. I went and got it and it drove home nice and smoothe, I then parked it for the night. Tuesday, I went to the store for some "party drinks", thats about 25 round trip. Right before I got there the oil gauge went from normal to 0 again. I had to get so I drove it back, the temperature stayed consistant on my way back and it drove smoothe. I stoped at the gas station about a mile or two before home for cigs. When I got back in and started back home I started hearing it knocking a little scared me to death so I limped it back home and it hasnt moved since. I think im gonna have it "carried" to the mechanic and have the oil pump replaced and the pan cleaned really good. I hope their "its ok" mistake didnt hurt my just broke in 75k mile engine :(.
Thanks for hearing my detailed story of the past few days.
Has anyone had any problems like this before?
Thanx Guys

Message: before you tow it to the dealer, I would suggest an oil change.
It is possible that you may have a bad oil filter. Change the oil yourself and that cures the problem, you save a ton of money.
Just a suggestion.

Message: Oil pressure drops are seldom intermittent. The pump is mechanical and should either work or not work. The bearings and the rest of the engine oil path is either good or bad. If there is a failure which leads to a catastrofic loss of pressure, the pressure will remain lost.
There would be cause for concern if the "knock" you heard was substantial. If you "thought" you were able to discern an engine knock, you might be trying too hard to hear something.
The senario you've described lends it self more to an intermittent electrical problem than a mechanical failure.
Good luck.

Message: I agree that your problem sounds like an eltrical one. It sounds like a bad cold solder joint on the IP/Cluster or bad sending unit. The part about the knock has me worried because poor oil presure will definately cause main and rod bearing knock. You will usualy get ticking lifter if the pressure goes between 5-8 psi and rod bearing knock below that. You really need to get to the bottom of this!
