Subject: looking to buy, what to look for? IP: Logged
Message: I'm just starting my search, but I'm looking at a 97-99 (maybe up to 2000)sport 4x4 extended cab (not quad-cab) Dakota, with a V8, and I'd prefer a standard. I think the only V8 in the 97-99 4x4 was the 5.2 and then the 4.7 option in 00 right?
Now, is there problems that I should look for? I've heard to stay away from the standards, is there truth to that? Or should I look at the auto's instead as being more reliable?
Also, what's the options for rear ends in those as far as gear ratio's and posi vs. open? Where on the truck would I look for the RPO codes to tell me what it's got for a rear end combo and what code means what?
Ok, I think that's all my questions for now, thanks guys.

Message: I don't have any input on the older Dak's, but I can tell you that I'm very happy with the 3.92 LS diff.
On wet roads my Dak does not try to put the rear end swinging in front of me. The LS seems to push my truck in the direction I point the wheel.
The 3.92 is great for towing. If you're not going to tow don't bother with the 3.92, you'll be getting bad enough milage with the 3.55's ;)
