Subject: Trans Temp Guage IP: Logged
Message: I just installed my autometer trans temperature guage and was surprised to see that it only read 125 deg. while driving and 150 while is was not moving....no air thru cooler....outside temperature was about 40 degrees.....does this sound a little too low....what could be wrong?

Message: I've been thinking about putting in a trans temp gauge but I don't know if theres a place to put the sensor in the trans. I have a 46-rh and havent spent much time looking. I just thought I'd ask on here before I bought anything. Have any of you put trans temp gages on a 518 before?
Thanks geoff.

Message: How long did you drive the truck when temp reached 125? Also, if too large of a cooler is used, it may take a while before the fluid heats up.

Message: I drove it for about 10 miles. I mounted the sensor in the trans pan.....all you have to do is drill a hole, mount the sending unit and run a wire to the guage.

Message: keep in mind that since your sensor is in the pan it is reading the cooled fluid after it returned from the raditor.
The actual temp of the trans's working parts is higher than what you see on your gauge. How much higher?? who knows, it depends on what type of radiator/cooler and how cold it is outside and how fast you're moving...
I generally think the best place for the sensor is on the outflow tubing as close to the trans as possible... but that won't help you now :(

Message: Driving about ten miles may not be sufficient enough to bring the trans to full operating temp. Some of the recommended guidelines I have seen say that you should be driving at highway speeds for all of fifteen minutes or better as well.
