Message: Are you using your 4x4 in conditions that don't call for it. The jerking action sounds like binding. Otherwise, I would check the fluid in the diff.

Message: You DO NOT want to use 4 wheel when you are on any kind of dry pavement. This will ruin your 4 wheel drive. When you are in 4 wheel drive the front wheels (the left front and the right front) are enganged to spin at the same speed. Now, when you make a turn, it is obvious that the inside wheel will need to spin faster than the outside wheel. This will cause the front to "bind". This is a basic explaintion. If anybody has a more indepth explanation feel free. But I recommend that you switch over to 2 wheel when encountering a decent amount of dry pavement, moreso when making any kind of turn.

Message: The jerking sensation is actually normal with these vehicles (brand new ones will do it) when turning sharply with 4wd engaged. It is more pronounced when the vehicle has regular, universal type (cross style) axle joints. It is a binding condition, though I don't believe it is related to the front wheels being "locked together" at the same speed (unless the differential has been changed to a locker type), the normal differential is designed to take care of the difference in wheel speed.

| RE: noise in front end while in 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: The noise is caused by a differential issue. With standard part-time transfer case (NP-231), the front and back drive shafts are locked together. When you begin to turn, say a left turn, the right front tire must spin faster than the left since it has a longer turn radius. The front differential will allow this with no problem. The issue is that now, since front and back drive shafts are locked, one of the rear wheels must suddenly speed up to match the right front. Since the back wheels haven't started turning yet, this results in one back wheel chirping a bit and then the front right plowing a bit and back and forth until the back end is turning also, then it smoothes out. The full-time transfer case (NP-241) precludes this by using a differential in the case allowing front and back driveshafts to rotate at different speeds. When the NP-241 is placed in 4hi-loc or 4lo-loc, the center differential is locked, making it feel identical to the NP-231.

Message: More than likely it's the wheel bearings. Does the
noise get louder if you turn left or right?
