Having a problem with my 4WD "idiot" light on the console next to the shifter. When I shift into 4WD it won't light. Verified that I'm in 4WD and that the bulb is o.k. Couldn't get a voltage from the wires to the bulb. Is there a sensor that drives the light?

At least you have one... My 2001 QC doesn’t have a light on the dash... (or does the 2001 come with one and mine is burnt out also?)

I am always afraid that I will leave it in 4x4 and check the dial constantly

$35 sensor that screws into the side of the transfer case. They are crappy. A lot of guys have to change it. Go to your dealer and get a new, they can even show you the manual to give you a heads up.

Sorry- I might have mis-read the original post. I thought the genII had indicators lights on the dash. After re reading, it sounds like they may be the same

Another way for DC to save 1/2 a cent by not putting 4WD indicators in the dash cluster, only the little light at switch that is barely visible. My wife keeps leaving hers on lately cuz she forgets and can't see the switch indicator unless she leans to the right to see it. I have the same complaint, although I seem to remember what I have it set in so don't leave it in 4WD on accident most of the time.

Thanks, Cory. Went to the dealer and got the switch - the called it a "Trasfer Case Mode Switch". It listed for $32, they gave it to me for net ($19). Replaced it last night and it works great!

How hard was the install... was it a simple unscrew the old one and toss in the new one hook up a wire??

Let me know ... Mine quit this year also. UGH

RSQ -

I found it pretty easy to install, just like you described. The hardest thing was locating it - it sits on top of the transfer case toward the rear, so you're working blind from below. I thought about trying to get to it from inside the cab, but that seemed like more work.

All I did was unsnap the wiring harness, spray some liquid wrench on it, and use a 7/8 inch wrench to loosen it. New one screwed right in, and harness snapped back on. Didn't have to drain the transfer case. If everything goes well it'll take 10 minutes.

PS: Roger that on the Dodges.

Replaced mine today and it was easier than I thought. It took about 5 minutes and worked like a dream! The hardest part was getting the skidplate off, bolts were rusted fast...LOL.Thankfully air tools make it easier!
