Subject: dakota 3.9 to 318 swap HELP!
IP: Logged

Message:
i have a 93 3.9 dakota. i ripped out a 318 out of a 74 dart and rebuilt it tuff. my question has been asked many of times will little luck in an answer. how can i make this swap? i'm still not to sure if the auto A-500 tranny and torque converter from the 3.9 will mount, and if not what auto tranny and converter will; and what tranny will mount up to my 93 transfer case also. is there a parts truck i should look out for like a 89 V8 dakota or some type of D100. something to make it a cheaper convertion. also are the motor mounts that bad to get costumized if needed on this swap. i'm only 20 and new to the morpar family your help would be much appreciated thank you for you time and knowledge. any added info is much appreciated.

the a-500 tranny will fit onto the 318, one problem you are going to run into is that the motors used in the dakotas are magnum motors. one from a 74 dart is not. i'm not sure if the motor mounts are the same from year to year, i know the v6 uses the same motor mount as the v8, but you have 4x4 so your motor mounts are different. you also probably won't be using fuel injection, and you could run into problem getting everything to work right, anything can be done with time and money, just howmuch do you want to spend?

I know the motors are different the 74 is a LA motor and the dakota is magnum. because of this should i look for an older 3 speed autoand if so what would the right type be in order to match everything. i plan on puting in a shift kit and floor shifter and yes i'm yanking the computer and going carb and anolog.

Your trans should work, it dosen't know what motor is in front of it. I think Schumacer (sp?) makes conversion mounts for your application. Just pick up any mopar mag and they usually have an ad.

if you don't want over drive, find a 904 tranny, you can find more stuff for the older ones than the new ones. if you rip out all the electronic stuff out, it will be easier.

would a 518 be a better tranny and does anyone make motor mounts for this 93 to 74 swap?

Try www.engine-swaps.com if you're having a problem with the motor mounts. Isn't magnum motor basically LA block and main difference is in the heads ? I think left side mounts differ between 318 and 360, at least with the older motors. And I think you'll need a truck style oil pan, don't think car style fits.
