Subject: 4.7 oil sludge
IP: Logged

Message:
Just had my 9000 mile oil change at the dealer on my 2002 Dak Quad Cab. When I got home I pulled the oil fill tube cap off and found it full of white milky sludge. In the filler tube there is a baffle of some sort. I pulled it out and found more sludge. It is highly concentrated around the PCV valve and at the bottom of the tube. Is anyone else with a 4.7 engine having the same problem?

I have two Daks, a 2k and a 02 with the 4.7 and I have no probs. 40 k on the 2000 and 16k on the 02 Dak. I use a 180 T stats also. and change my oil every 3,000 miles. some peoples Daks have this problem, I believe it is caused from driving short trips and not having the engine heat up good.

Basically nothing to worry about. Do your search "oil in water 4.7", you'll get the thread to come up. That's where I found this link to the DC TSB on the issue. http://www.geocities.com/natedak2k/Oil_cond_TSB.jpg

Jimcze...I had that sludge problem all so and still have it.If any one lives in a cold climate area,YOU ARE GOING TO GET THE MILK SHAKE LOOK.I ripped on the dealer and Chrysler, with no prevail.

The oil fill spout is mounted on the out side of the engine...when the cold air hits the hot oil spout,bingo..."the milk shake look".If you leave your truck out over night{in the cold} you will see it more so than leaving it in a heated
Garage.I live in OH.And I don't get the mile shake look in the warmer days and nights.

Use a good grade of oil and filter, keep your oil changed.I use Mobil 1 and a Fram tough guard filter ever 4 thousand miles. If you go back in the Archives{Dealer Recalls}you see others that have voiced there concerns.

Um, please don't discount this so easily. Unless the oil manufacturing process has changed in the last few years there is another cause for the white, milky look to your oil. It can also be caused by having coolant in the oil, either by an inept mechanic or a blown head gasket.
I live in a cold climate, with no garage, and I've never noticed a white, milky state of my oil, whether warm or not.

It is normal all 4.7 in a cold climate do this!! I have noticed that synthetic oil does it less and short around town driveing seems to magnify this issue. I am more concerned about your 9000 mile oil change. Even if you are doing HWY driveing 9000 miles is a bit much. I could see this with a bybass filter system and good synthetic but I hope this is not being done with a chaep full flow spin on and regular oil!!!!!

ScottE...Thanks for the link good info to have in case a problem should occure.
Sandman...I should have said this was my third oil change at the dealer. Sorry for the confusion.
I've owned many cars,6 right now,and have never seen this problem before. My '97 Z-28 has a similar filler tube and there has never been any sludge build up. Thanks for the replies...little pissed at Dodge right now.

Jimcze...this will not make you feel any better but I have ran the living sh*t out of my 4.7!There has not been a day or night that I have not had my foot in the TB.My truck has 27,000 trouble free miles with many oil changes. If there was any water in the oil or a crack here or there this truck would have blown the engine long ago.The 4.7 was built as a truck engine and it is one bad a*s little engine.I being a Ford man love this 4.7, to bad Chrysler does not have a Cuda body with the 4.7 !

9000 miles is cutting it close on the oil changes but you don't really HAVE to change every 3000 in your manual it says you can change every 7000,but watch it bacause if heard of people going 12 or 13000 and thats when your oil starts turning into jello...and thats not good we have to take care of or dakota's.

If you were from the Houston area, and ever watch a TV, you'd know what this means.

Well, the sludge reminded me of it.

There's this famous commentator here in Houston-Marvin Zindler.

He does alot. One thing is go around and broadcast the Health Departments Findings on the news about various restaurants, and one of the things he's famous for is saying: "and they found slime in the ice machine!"
