Subject: Which Oil filter to use???
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey, just wanted to get some feedback as to which oil filter I should be using. I am currently running a K&N gold series filter, I guess this is because I need the extra filtration to trap all the dirt that my K&N air filter lets in :)

The Mobil 1 filter is very good. Wix, Napa Gold (made by Wix), Purolator,AC Delco, and a few others are quality filters also. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Fram. Also avoid Pennzoil and Quaker State filters because I believe they are made by Fram also.

If you are looking at conventinal spin on full flow filter? 1)AC DELCO DuraGuard Gold, 1)Mobile 1 synthetic filter, 2)AC Delco DuraGuard Silver, 3)Napa Gold, 4)Hastings, 5)AC Delco. K&N filter flow real nicely and will take alot of pressure but they do not filter out as much dirt as other premium filters like the DuraGuard Gold or the Mobile 1 filters do. The Napa Golds flow realy well too and will filter out more dirt than the K&N's but they will burst alot easier than a K&N. I am partial too the plain jane ACDelco DuraGurd filters that can be bought at any Wal-Mart or parts store. The are a well built and very reasonably priced. I rated them based on how well they remove 10-20 micron particals in a single pass and how long they continue to work as advertised before the activate the bypass valve. I have read some studies of Fram filters failing after 8 hours of use. I am amazed at how well all of my engines have lasted in spite of my use of Fram oil filters. I work right next door to the technical advisors for AC Delco so I have alot of research at my finger tips. I quit useing Fram shortly after I started working their.

I changed my oil when I first got my truck and noticed a BIG slowdown in pressure pickup. I am concerned, I am using Pennzoil 5W30 and a Pennzoil filter but that is the last one going on my engine. I am worried that it may start making noises. That is a very tight engine and I want to keep it that way.
Any suggestions about Prolong or Slick50 to help it out?

Not a oil filter question but one re: when it's ok to put synthetic oil into a 4.7 for the first time?

My Service Manager recommends waiting till 8-9k miles for a full engine break in. Also said not to use 5w30 but 10w30 as a minimum...thoughts on this? (NY heat in the summer time probably influenced his recommendation)

Thanks.

Have you ever heard of a bypass oil filter? Some study into it and you will be converted. It flows more and cleans down to .5 sized microns. All the others out there, K&N, Mobil 1, Wix, Napa, etc. all get down to 10-20 sized microns, so you can see right there which will filter the best, keeping the oil clean. Plus, they flow more than those others. I think those are good filters, but consider a bypass filter. I know Amsoil makes bypass filters, so you might check into their inventory.

I ran my 4.7 500 miles then I switched to Mobil 1 10W-30 and Mobil 1 filter #M1-301 and everything has been fine. As far as viscosity choice with conventional oil in a 4.7 5W-30 might be a slightly better choice than 10W-30 because it's an overhead cam engine and you would probably want oil to the top of the heads in a hurry. Just my thoughts but 10W-30 should work fine in summer temps. Chrysler does prefer 5W-30 in the 4.7 and 10W-30 in the 3.9,5.2,and 5.9. I would encourage the earlier poster to stay away from a Pennzoil filter or Quaker State or Fram filters for that matter. They are all basically the same internally and leave much to be desired. I've seen too many engines in which the orange colored Fram doesn't seem to catch the harmful gunk.

Whichever oil filter anyone goes with, make sure you get one with an anti-drainback valve in it. That way, the oil doesn't flow out of the filter back into the engine after shutoff. with the valve, you always have a filter full of oil right at startup.

I think they all have them but some work better than others. I cut a Fram apart and I didn't like the way theirs fit. You can see the "valve" through the outer holes. It is black on all the ones I looked at and is right behind the holes. It is a flapper valve that just pressures away from the base when the engine is running and seats back against the base when the engine stops.

Page 0-5 of the 2001 Daimler Chrysler Corporation Dakota Service Manual Lists 10-30 oil as appropreiate for all temps from 0F-100F+++ DEGREES. I can not think of too many places here in the lower 48 states that get below 0 degrees. P.S. That penzoil filter is a rebadged fram. Frams are made by alied signal.

The Fram was a decent filter in days gone by but they have been made cheaper and cheaper in the last few years to reduce cost and increase profit. They are inferior by a large margin to a Wix, Napa Gold, Purolator, Mobil 1 and a few others. The anti-drainback valve plain sucks. This causes a ticking when engines are started and have to re-fill the filter with oil. The total area of filtering material inside is smaller compared to others also. I've examined the inside of some engines that had regular oil changes and used Fram filters and have seen lots of dirt and particles and debris.

I'm not sure what filters Jiffy uses. I would assume Pennzoil because if I remember right they feature Pennzoil oil. I don't know if Fram uses the Triad design in both the air and oil filters or air only. I'm just speaking from reports I've seen and my own personal experience of seeing how they are assembled and how they perform. I wouldn't use a Fram, Quaker State, or Pennzoil filter if somebody gave me them free but it's all about personal preference and more power to you if you want to use them.

Take my advice from someone that works at Jiffy Lube and stay away from there. They do a half-ass job and use half-ass oil filters. Change your oil yourself, you'll get better results.

Based on the research I`ve uncovered I would agree with most of the posts on this page. Firstly, the Fram filters suck, they have low media surface area which means they will clog faster and end up bypassing dirty oil, their anti-drainback and bypass valves are substandard and their filter cartridge end caps are made of cardboard! Junk! I was using Fram, thinking like alot of people that it was a premium filter! hah! After cutting one open,I was convinced it was crap and even felt a little betrayed by this brand I trusted! I was pissed that I had unknowingly taken a chance on messing up my engine with this filter! Now I use an AC Delco duraguard, its not THE best filter available but its under 3.00 like the fram and vastly superior. Wix/Napa filters are also good as are Mobil one and K&N,although for 10.00 I`d prefer the mobil ones synthetic media to the resin-impregnated cellulose that K&N uses. Just avoid FRAM and youll be fine.

Here is a list of oil filters that are considered to be good quality, they all feature metal end-caps,metal bypass valves and media surface areas over 300 square inches for long service life. The list is as follows:Wix,Napa,K&N,Mobil one,Purolator and AC Delco. There are others of course but they may be harder to locate at most local retail stores.I dont recommend Fram filters because of poor construction quality and potential for failure. The only Fram model that looks like it might be worth using is the X2 that comes packaged in a metal cylinder, its 10.00 I think.Remember, dont take an oil filter for granted, its not just a metal can,it performs a very vital function, without which can result in reduced engine service life and possible engine failure.

When waldo world started carrying frams, it became a foregone conclusion that they would get cheaper and cheaper as time went on due to waldo worlds relentless pressure to keep costs down.
SO, something had to get cut which is one reason Fram uses cardboard end caps in its filters and a reason I no longer use Fram filters.

My choice(s)?? Wix/NAPA or Purolator.

For those who want a BLACK FRAM(as opposed to orange).....buy a MOpar filter for twice what you would pay at wally world.

Keep in mind, not all vehicles need an anti-drainback valve, like the engines where the filter is upright, which automatically keeps the filter full of oil.Even the horizontally mounted filters wouldnt drain dry completely without an anti-drainback valve, they would drain until the level reached the bottom edge of the center opening and then slow to a trickle or stop.Fram makes the worst anti-drainback valves because theirs seal against cardboard which does not produce a reliable seal, which is why Fram filters often cause valvetrain noise at startup.Metal end caps are better for sealing, and so are filters with a coil spring against the filter element instead of a leaf spring, the coil spring produces better resistance which helps to improve the effectiveness of the nitrile rubber drainback seal against the backplate.Thats why I rely on Wix filters, the choice of commercial fleets and industry for years!

before I even started changing my own oil, i took my car to my chevrolet dealership for service loyally. They always put an AC DELCO Duraguard on it (Cavalier) from the time it was brand new, it now has 72,000 miles and is 4 years old, and runs excellent. I have had no problems with the AC Delco Oil filters. My personal opinion is that no matter if I pay 10.00 for a filter or 3.00, my car will still run fine until 150,000 miles or when I want a new one. Thats all that matters right? Is that it at least is reliable for you?
