I cut open a piece of junk (oh, I'm sorry can't sat what I think, due to internet restrictions) FRAM filter, it has about 11 pleats in the filter media as opposed to the about 25 heavier pleats in the MOBIL 1 filter(autozone @12$). I can't believe my engine still runs after using FRAM filters for 36k miles, but I am going to rebuild it anyway. As for the bypass valve, it's not good if it opens as it is a rubber or (cardboard for FRAM) that lets your oil bypass the filter media, letting the dirt and contaminents right back into your engine. Ultimately I am going to install a fender mounted dual filter assembly to ease filter changes and improve filtering capacity, especially with the high volume/capacity pump which will be standard equipment in the new engine I plan on building. By the way, STAY AWAY FROM JET CHIPS THEY ARE SHYIT!!!, buy a mopar perf chip instead

I like Wix and AC Delco oil filters,Hastings and Baldwin filters are also well made.Everyone will tell you to stay away from Fram, its true they are crap.Frams have low media surface area which means they are more likely to plug up sooner and bypass dirty oil.Frams have also been known to come apart and send bits of glue and paper through the engine.

Personally, I used to put Fram filters on all my vehicles, just like my Dad. Dad worked for a bus company and one of the mechanics there took a Fram filter and a Napa filter and cut them open. Dad was convinced from that point on to use Napa, too much junk and crap inside the Fram. Now I run either K&N, Napa, or Purolator Pure1 on my truck. And forgive me for going off topic a bit, but has anyone used the new quick drain or whatever it is from Fram? Seems to me they are making a big deal about it being the quickest, cleanest way to drain your oil, but the still haven't done anything about the oil from the filter that runs down your arm when you loosen the filter. The other drawback I can see is if you use the quick drain, you can't inspect the drain plug for any metal contamination. I haven't gotten one yet and I'm wondering if it's worth the money. I looked real close at them and they at least do come with a dust cover. If I get one, I'm gonna make sure I keep my old drain plug handy. Any comments from the peanut gallery?

Dakota39M,

Just punch a small hole in the oil filter when you're changing it out (I use a rubber mallet and the smallest standard screwdriver I own). That drastically eliminates the amount of hot oil running down your arms.

Fram used to be good , about maybe 15 years ago (or more) but apparently what happened was they got the contract to sell at Walmart, and Walmart made them lower their price to them. So in order to do this, Fram had to cut corners and voila! we have crummy Fram filters. Fram is simply riding on past reputation while churning out crap.

Fram is, indeed, junk. Check out the following website. Pretty interesting reading. It covers many of the more popular filters.

What with all the discussion of Premium Oil Filters, I would like to invite everyone to visit my online store for information regarding AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filters (SDF). There are a lot of good filters, I am simply asking that you consider ours.
-----
Amsoil Super Duty Oil Filters (SDF) offer all-around better filtration and protection than conventional filters. Full flow design for extended drain intervals and severe service. Our filters contain a high-tech blended filtration media composed of cellulose, synthetic and glass fibers. The media sets the Super Duty apart from conventional filters in capacity, efficiency and service life, delivering superior filtration and protection.

The AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filter (SDF) is designed to provide maximum filtration while meeting the high flow demands of modern automobiles. The AMSOIL SDF contains a special cellulose, synthetic and glass blend media that offers the best possible balance of long life, high capacity and overall efficiency.

The AMSOIL SDF has a lofted fiber depth-type media that traps dirt throughout its entire thickness for exceptional filtering efficiency. It keeps oil clean and free of wear-causing contaminants.

The AMSOIL SDF has a heavy-duty case of drawn steel. The case is double-crimped at the base with rolled-under seaming to withstand extreme pressure surges and road shocks.

The AMSOIL SDF has an anti-drainback valve that keeps trapped contaminants in the filter when the engine is not running.

Baldwin Filters B2-HPG is better then Mobil-1 large size filter and B34-HPG is the smaller size. Booth fit or 4.7. It is a synthetic glass fiber filter. The B2-HPG is the same as Amsoils SPF15. I do not know the price. It can be used as an oil filter or hydralic filter.
