Subject: Cold start "buzz" IP: Logged
Message: When the temps really get low and the truck sits overnight, a buzz can be heard for about half a second at startup. To the best of my ability, i have searched for a clearance issue with the fan blades and the shroud but have come up empty handed.
Especially for those of you who have done fan work. what may be some areas that pose clearance concerns.
Its possible its ice building up on something?

Message: Is it really loud? I know the Fuel Pump can sometimes buzz on startup... but I suppose since you are looking at the fan it seems to be coming from the front of the truck?

Message: Got the same noise on my 01 Dak your describing when it is below 20 degrees and truck sits all night, doesn't do it after it is warmed up and restarted. My 02 Dak doesn't do it at all. To me it almost sounds to come from near the firewall, possibly the vaccuum system for ventilation system? if there is one.

Message: i have it twice. my 2000, and my 93 do it when the temp drops. it comes from the power steering pump just a little bit of cavitation before the fluid moves

Message: I have a 99 and that happens to me in the winter all the time. I have just come to accept the fact that it does it. Hey, when it gets to -45 degrees (YES, it is that RIGHT NOW!!!) you hear all sorts of weird stuff!!!

Message: The steering pump theory jives with my experience.
When I first turn the wheel it feels like it slips. Similar sound on really cold (its 8F now) starts, only in morning. Aside from sound and initial turn of the wheel, no real problem.

Message: A friend agrees that it is the power steering pump. If you look at TSBs at alldata.com, in Aug 01 there is one for power steering fluid change - new type. The dealer said there was nothing they could do. Are there any additives available? synthetic maybe?

Message: I also have the same quick "buzz" noise at startup in the extreme cold mornings. I almost want to believe it's the fan clutch.. The only reason I think that is because my 99 Chevy 3500 work van does the exact same thing... That van has done it every cold winter for the past 4 years with no affect on anything...
FWIW, I recently had the fan clutch replaced due to vibration (they found out)at the dealer - although I went in for getting vibration from the A/C compressor checked. The "buzz" is still the same /w/ the old/new fan clutch...

Message: Actually I've heard too that it was the fan clutch. Another guy I know replaced his and it was fine after that. I don't think it's a really serious problem though....I hope!
