Subject: Blown motor-97 Dak??

Message:
My father-in-law borrowed my truck to move from Sarasota to Orlando (where I live). (He has a Toy truck and needed a real truck for the job) Anyway he started having over-heating problems with it which it NEVER does. Apparently he stopped a few times for water but continued driving to the point of blowing a head gasket. At this point he got off the highway and drove about 2 miles to a parking lot where my poor truck gave out. I had to go down and get first the over-loaded trailer and then go back to tow my baby home (Tampa to Orlando). While loading it on the dolly the motor would turn over but not catch and then it went CLUNK and now won't turn over at all. What I'm wondering is if anybody has a line on a engine that is in the Orlando, FL area. It's a 97 with the 3.9 but with 117k on the odometer I'm open to suggestions. I love this truck, but the holidays and what-not make funds tight. $2000 is what it'll cost for a Discount/Advance motor and I'm not sure if that's a good one or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want my truck back!

Uh huh... and let me guess, he's not offering to help even though he's the one that pushed on when it was overheating (usually a sign that something isn't right), and after it blew a head gasket?

I'm in Orlando, but you can't have my engine. Sorry! I'm not sure of anyplace where you can get one in decent shape either...

Contact Masterson's Auto Parts (he's my father-in-law). He got in a 3.9 V-6 a little while back out of a '98 Dakota that a guy had put a V-8 in the truck. If I remember correctly...it was a low milage engine...under 40,000 miles. He's asking $750 for the engine. Check www.mastersonautoparts.com. I search his inventory and it's under a '98-Dodge Dakota-engine. I know that's the one he got; due to the stock number ending in 02, which means he got it this year...and he doesn't get to many Dakota parts.
I'll see him tomorrow for sure...if your interested call him on Thursday at 1-800-405-0963. Or if he's not open I'll check it out for you tomorrow. You will have to pay for shipping, but he ships via R&L truckline, so if you are close to a hub, then you can pick it up there. Just let me know.

I was able to talk to my father-in-law, and he still has the engine, and it is a very low mileage engine.

I will be working down at the yard on Thursday Dec. 26th answering the phone(s). So, if you want to, call us and I'll be able to give you all the information.

Just ask for Chet (me) or David (father-in-law).

I just checked the board today....Christmas with the fam you know
Todd, he did offer to help with the cost of the motor, too bad he doesn't have any money.
Chet, Since I missed the post until tonight, I will try to call tomorrow, I'm definitely interested, but work is a nightmare so I have to find time and a signal on my cell for the call. I am literally going crazy without my truck....I have to drive my wife's old Geo Storm to work until I get my truck fixed!

No problem...he will be open from 8:00AM to 5:00PM EST. Just ask for David and he can help you with the engine. Sometimes he is very hard to get on the phone, but he should be around there somewhere. The earlier you call, the better chance you have of getting David personally. I've already told him that I was discussing the engine with someone on this site, so he knows which one you're talking about. I worked for him today, and checked the inventory. The engine is still there waiting for a buyer.

The price is $750+shipping, which like I said, is via truckline. Make sure you're near a hub or a place where the engine can be delivered to your advantage. If you decide to buy it, then he may be able to get it on a truck tomorrow. That is a big maybe...he's working short handed this week, and is running the whole show by himself.
