Subject: Changed ball joints still get a grinding

Message:
I have a '97 Dakota Sport 4x2 with 67,000 miles. I was noticing the other day that when I took a left hand turn I would get a grinding noise, very faint. I checked the ball joints figuring they were the cause, they were loose, not horrible or anything but I changed them anyways (all of them on both sides).

After I did the change I still have the grinding noise present on the drivers side same as before- but it has been getting worse and worse.

If I am driving with the wheel turned the least bit to the left I get a knocking/grinding noise. If I am getting this noise, and turn the wheel to the right it goes away totally. If the wheel is straight no noise is present.

Now I checked the ball joints again, made sure they were bolted up correctly, and checked the tie rods, they were fine.

I did notice one thing- the side I am getting the noise from is leaking grease from the wheel hub. I figure its the bearings are going bad and making the noise on me- but what im confused about is I can sometimes shut the truck off and i will get a grind very very quickly from that area in the front, almost like its getting rid of the stress built up there, and I get it sometimes when I start the truck as well.

I am very confused and I am not sure what else to check.

Sway bar seems fine, I am leaning towards a bad wheel bearing on the drivers side since the noise goes away when I turn to the right.

Thanks for the help everyone.
-John

I'm just guessing here, but possibly your hub assembly? IF it is your hub assembly, replace the whole thing. Dont be like me and try to be cheap to have new bearings pressed in, I ended up replacing one side complete. Take off your hub assembly, and try to look at the bearings, if you see scorching/burning of some sort of discoloration it could possibly be the hub and bearings, good luck

changed the hub assembley out, no difference just a loss of $180. The old hub was pissing out grease anyways so I guess its alright I changed it. Figured out the problem though, broken exhaust mount, gonna have it welded back on thursday.
