Subject: 318 Fan Removal... IP: Logged
Message: I am interested in taking the clutch fan off. I have done some searches but haven't really found direct answers to my questions. First, if I were to remove the fan, is it absolutely necessary to replace it with an electric fan (I live in New England and I currently have a 180 tstat). I was thinking of maybe just adding some purple ice (I think that is what it is called) to help the cooling system out. Also, I take it that since the fan is connected to the water pump, the original pulley remains in place and a new belt would not be needed? Thanks for any response.

Message: You are correct, no need for a different belt, the water pump pulley stays right where its at. I researched this subject as well and got mixed reviews. First of all, removal of the fan was mainly done in the old days when the fan had no clutch and it was robbing the engine of power constantly. Nowadays the clutch fan "free-wheels" at about 1000 rpms, so when you're moving it actually don't consume alot of power. Its main purpose is to cool at idle. As for the addition of an elec. fan, probably not. One... you live in NE, and two..... you have a 180 t-stat. I have a 180t and I live in Texas, I removed my fan and have had absolutely no problems, this summer may be a different story, but during the cool months, Im leaving it off. I dont think removing it is really as beneficial as I once thought, but every little bit counts. Its very easy to remove, take off the shroud and use a big cresent wrench or a 1 7/16 end wrench and tap the wrench with a hammer and it will come right off.

Message: Thanks for the detailed response. I've heard nothing but good things about removing the fan. Also, is the nut a normal thread or is it reversed. To me it would make sense that it were reverse threaded so that it would self tighten when spinning (assuming the fan spins in the clockwise direction when facing the front of the truch, this is off the top of my head). Did you have trouble holding the pulley in place at all? I have a strap wrench and was thinking about takin the belt off and holding the pulley in place with the strap wrench if necessary. One last thing, how easy is it to get the fan shroud off. Seems like it would be simple. Thanks

Message: The shroud is easy, only two bolts on my 2002. The nut is regular thread, NOT REVERSE !! Some folks on here have assumed that and regreted it later. I thought the same about holding the pulley in place but it is much much easier to just quickly pop the wrench with a hammer, the pulley has just enough resistance that when you suddenly strike the nut it just spins it right off, this was a tip I got from someone on this board. But there are still people out there that say do not take your fan off for the possiblity of over heating, but like I said, with my 180 t stat my guage has never gotten passed 1/3 of the way, but im sure idleing in summer heat will be a little hotter. Good luck.
