Subject: 97-99 & 00-02 Upper Control Arm Diff? IP: Logged
Message: According to the Dodge dealer, the upper control arm assembly for a 2000-2002 Dakota 2wd will not fit a 97-99 2wd. Anyone know what changed from 99 to 00 on the 2 wd front suspension? I found a brand new set of upper control arm assemblies (control arm, ball joints, bushings, etc.) that I can get a good deal on, but if they won't fit my 97, it won't do me any good. Anyone?

Message: the ball joint assembly is different. on the 97-99's the upper ball joint is screwed into a housing like the older cars. 00-03 are rivited to the upper control arm.

Message: The ball joints on a 97 sport 2wd are not screwed in, they are rivited. I just did mine a while ago. If the dealers says they don't fit, there could be geometry differences. Not really sure how you could check that out.

Message: Dealer doesn't say it won't fit... just that it is listed under a different part number. Does anybody know what changed from 99 to 2000 (other than ball joints)? I'm tempted to go ahead and try them to see if they'll fit. If not, I could probably sell 'em to someone else with a 2000+ model.

Message: The only difference between a 1999 and a 2000 upper control arm is the style of boot used on the ball joint. Dodge changes the part number even if all they do is relocate a sticker or change the bushing color or ball joint boot color. For instance, there are different part numbers for 97-99 lower control arms and 2000-up, that's because the ball joint boot on the older ones is black and the newer ones are clear.
