Subject: Pre-Mag 3.9 to Mag 5.2 Engine Swap

Ok, I know I'm a newbie here, but I've been floating around the forum for a while, and I'm about to undertake what looks to be a rather daunting task, so I want to make sure I know what I'm getting into, and I trust all the Mopar GODS on here to kick me in the right direction if I'm off my rocker...

Ok, I own an '88 Dakota 4X4 that I use as an off-road rock-crawler and it's been a horse for me since I've owned it. The time has come to rebuild or replace the engine as it has about 175000 hard miles on it (It's a HORSE, neither the engine or auto trans have ever been rebuilt!) and here's my quandry. I have the opportunity to buy a used magnum 5.2L from a GenII Dakota (I believe it was a 93) and I'd like to drop it in. So far, I've learned that I need the correct mounts, an electric push-type fan in front of the radiator, and the wiring and engine computer for the magnum.
My concerns are with the wiring. I've seen a couple horror stories from people saying that all engine and DASH wiring needs to be replaced, and you'll need the schematics, some modifications, and a bunch of patience for this, but I've heard from others that all you need is the proper (original) wiring from the magnum engine for the engine compartment and it will work fine. Could someone shed some light on this so I don't get myself into something I'm not ready for?
Secondly, I've also read and heard that the original A500 3 speed auto in my truck will bolt up ok, but probably isn't the best choice for the life of the engine, and I should probably buy a 44RE trans. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for listening, folks. I've searched and searched the posts on here and found some great info from Walt (walt-n-ingrid.com) and others so far, but nothing concrete about this. I really appreciate any suggestions and/or opinions you guys might have.

Mark

Im in the same boat with my 1990. It only has 110,000 miles but I want the performance options of the 318. Your right about the fan, and mounts. Go to engine-swaps.com. Check out there v8 dak swap. Good pointers there too. AS for the wiring, its holding me up too. Not sure as what to do.
On this site, since its right around Xmas, give the guys a few extra days on any replies. Everyone is busy and it happens like this every year. Good luck. Later
Joe E.

Do not buy any tranny that ends with "E". The means it's an electronic model, and requires the OBDII computer (1996 and up) to function. The RH models are what you want.

Also, any auto tranny you get should be fitted with the TranGo kit if you want long life. If you want long life, go with the beefier A518/46RH. The A500 was the first 4-speed auto tranny from Mopar. It is based on the smaller 3-speed auto originally known as the 904 and was used with the slant 6 and 318. The A500 can be built to handle over 500hp, but in stock form, I'd go with the A518 (based on the larger 727 Torqueflite) in a heartbeat. The 46RH is just a later model of the A518. The whole tranny line got new designation numbers in the mid-90's. The 42/44RH is basically, an A500.

maybe you should just cut the roof off your old battle axe, and weld it on the newer truck:)
