Subject: Water Pump leak?
IP: Logged

Message:
Lately, I have been getting small coolant leaks from the bottom of the water pump or lower rad. hose. (I think it is the bottom of the water pump gasket b/c it is dripping straight down onto the front cross member but I can not see it from the bottom b/c of the skid plate) It only happens sporadically and does not leak a lot, maybe a couple oz, enough to spread out an leave a spot no bigger than 12" across.

It did not start leaking until I tried a 20bl radiator cap (OEM is 16). After the first episode, I put the OEM cap back on?

Is it possible that at 82k the water pump gasket is going out? My truck runs cool since the 180 thermostat install a couple of months back and it did not leak after an extended romp in the sand (4Lo)where the temp gauge went to the middle of the dial.

What is the consensus opinion? (Don't want to kill someone's cat by leaking fresh ethylene glycol all over!)

Your seals and gaskets are made for 15 lbs of pressure. I would guess that 20 lb cap probably did one of them in. Sooner or later your engine will overheat because that leak will cause you not to be able to maintain pressure in the colling system. That's one of the ways your engine stays cool. If it were me I'd fix it. I don't want to get stuck somewhere. Also leaking antifreeze that gets on your serpentine belt will cause it to prematurely fail.

How difficult is the water pump gasket to change? Never done one before.

I looked at my Haynes manual and I think the leak is coming from the weep hole in the snout meaning the impeller shaft bearing is going out. I.E. time to replace it.

Now, since it has got to go, any high performance recommendations? What about gasket material, is RTV OK?

I changed out the water pump today and all went well except for a small (3-4 drops, then just wet) leak at the base of the metal heater hoses sleeve. I have put some RTV around the joint, any other suggestions?

If the leak continues at this metal sleeve, try taking the sleeve out, coating it with hi temp RTV, wait ten minutes and re-install it. It should fix the problem for good. Sealing it at the joint once it is installed didn't work for me......Ed L.

I had put RTV on when installing it originally but the additional I added at the joint did the trick, no leaks so far, even with the heater on full blast.
