Subject: '97 4WD Shifting Prob IP: Logged
Message: Recently developed a problem when shifting out of 4WD hi...shifter moves o.k. back to 2WD, but transfer case doesn't disengage for a few minutes, and when it does its a pretty loud thump and vibration...almost like its getting 'stuck' in 4WD. Any ideas? Thanks.

Message: My 99 does this as well. I have the t-case with full and part time 4WD, so I don't know if it works the same way, but just a thought. I found that if I disengage it while moving (above 5 or 10 MPH I think)it will disengage properly, but if not, it will do as you describe until I engage then disengage while moving. Kinda sucks because if I dont plan for disengaging it before making a tight turn or something the front end binds up and it isnt fun because I cant just disengage it while sitting there.

Message: Thanks for the info. Found out what was causing my problem - I had snow tires mounted on the rear, but the not the front, and this was causing stress on the transfer case. I didn't think it would be a problem since the snows are the same nominal size as the all weathers on the front, but I guess they were just enough different to cause the fronts and rears to rotate at different speeds. Just put the same snows on the front and it shifts out of 4WD great !!
