Subject: 2000 Quad Cab front bench seat problem
IP: Logged

Message:
3 weeks ago I bought a 2000 Quad Cab Dak with less than 20,000km on it, V6, 2WD, 5 speed. Unfortunately I absolutely hate the seats (bench), the support 'lump' in the back cushion makes my back go into agony after 40mins of driving. Anyone else found this, and what have you done about it? Are other Dakota seats (ie if I could find buckets from a wrecking yard) any better? If I don't get this problem solved I will have to get rid of the truck and will lose a pile of money on the taxes I just paid. As it is right now I can't stand driving it.

the seats in my dakota are some of the most
comfortable I've ever sat in. you should have
the dealership check the "lump" out.

Yeah, there shouldn't be a lump in your back. Could be a manufacturing defect of some sort.

Ditto to what "D" said.
I've got a 2001 QC with the bench (not buckets) seat and find them very comfortable.
Made dozens of 4 hour trips and no complaints.
I'd check out the seats in a dealer vehicle and make a complaint if you still feel yours are defective.

the seat cushions come off the frame. the line in the back of the top is a zipper - get to it from the bottom. unzip and the back comes off. The bottom seat cushion comes off from the bottom - it has wrap arounds that hook in on the bottom. pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

There is no difference between the split bench and bucket seat.
the distinction if more in reference to the console. the seats are exactly the same.
I have an extra set of factory seats for sale by the way if anyone is interested. I went with a set of OBX racing buckets in my '02 quad.

If there's no difference in the seats between bucket and bench, is it pretty easy to take out the center 'seat' or 'business console' and replace it with the the full console?

seats come out easy - you gotta take entire bench out - 8 bolts and cut out center console. If i remember right they tack welded console in 60/40 bench. looks like they could have bolted center console but weld is cheaper - real easy

They rivited on my middle seat to my buckets in my 98 reg cab. I took out the rivits with no trouble really and put in a centre console, All the screw holes and everything were there too, i guess cause its a standard way to make the cabs then. It is super easy to change that way then too! and if you want the middle seat back in, you just have to bolt it back on instead of riviting it.

Yes I am not real crazy about the seats either. What I really hate is the lack of a head rest. It could also use some side bolster and lumbar support. By far the worst seat though is the bench seat in the First generation Toyota Tacoma. I like Toyotas but their 1995 1/2 Tacoma has sucky seats. My 1986 4Runners bucket seats are more comfortable and they are 17 years old. So if you realy want to feel uncomfortable go take a Tacoma with bench seat for a spin. You will think that the seat in your Dodge is a lazy boy by comparison.

Sandman, I hear ya about those Toyota seats. I just spent a year working for the UN driving 95-99 model year Toyota 4Runners on all sorts of bad roads, goat trails, cross country, etc, out on 12 hour long patrols. Some days I would be in agony from the seats, felt like someone poking a steel rod into my back. When I drive my Dakota now, I start to get that same feeling, same stiffness and pain from before. Haven't got it in other vehicles (been test driving a lot in the last few days) but I still like the Dakota, just need to do something about it or else I'll have to give it up.

Sorry guys had to actually...work yesterday.
I'm in Idaho, Boise to be exact.
Someone else wanted to know about my seats. They are OBX they are a corbeau knock off by the looks with a simulated leather.(black and yellow.)
I finally got my head off the roof of my truck and now have incredible support from the back of my leggs up to my head. decent lumbar and superior side grip for taking tight corners.
I am not sure if the seats are worth shipping I may do so "horse trading" locally. Shipping would probably be about $100. but I have not checked.
if still interested let me know.
