Subject: NV 3500 Vibration, need input please
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone with a NV3500 have a vibration
under load in 1st gear? My quad is a little over
a year old with 7,000 miles. The vibration is
something I noticed this past summer pulling
a trailer.

When I’m starting out in 1st gear I can feel a
vibration in the shifter and floor pan of the truck
from 2000 rpm to about 3200 rpm. I switched
to Redline MTL this fall and the vibration
seemed a bit less (although I’ve got more
gear noise now). On a side note, the
magnetic transmission plug was completely
covered with metal slivers and graphite-type
paste and the original trans oil had a fair
amount of brass in it.

Anyway, it’s winter here in Wisconsin, I’ve got
150 lbs in the back of my truck, and I have my
friendly 1st gear vibration back anytime I more
than baby it from a stop. It’s vibrates more
when the truck is fully loaded or I’m pulling
something heavy like my ski boat. The more I
"get on it" the more it vibrates/shudders from
2,000rpm to about 3,200 rpm.

It vibrates at the same rpm I normally feel the
gas pedal buzz a bit during acceleration in all
gears when driving without a load. I’m
guessing (hoping) the extra weight is putting
more of a load on the trans and magnifying
the small "normal" amount of engine/trans
vibration.

I’m really wanting one of the KRC tremec
conversions.

Sorry for the long post.

Thoughts?

Does the Quad Cab just happen to have a two-piece driveshaft? If so the carrier bearing mount will be the source of the vibration - especially under any sort of load. I ended up having to shim mine to get the free travel out of it and get rid of the vibration. This same mount also was the source of 90% of the previous wheel-hop when I would get a little too aggressive on takeoff.

Duner,

My Quad does indeed have the two-piece
driveshaft, and my truck wheel hops really
easily, even in the snow. It has since new.

How do you shim the center carrier bearing?
I've noticed the huge rubber "donut" around
the bearing. It doesn't have any tears or
anything but does have a lot of movement up
and down and side to side. (the rubber has a
bunch of slots in it so it flexes easily)

Please explain.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

The slots are what you want to fill with shims. Take some pieces of 1/4" flat steel (1" wide) and cut them to about 2" long. Bend them into a semi-arc as best you can. Then shove them between the rubber mount and the center rubber ring around the shaft bearing. Then slip a hose clamp thru the slot, close it and tighten it as best you can. This will hold the steel pieces to the rubber and they won't go anywhere.

Put the steel on top and each side. You wont' be able to get any underneath the shaft, but you are trying to eliminate the upward and sideways movement anyhow. I've done this same mod (Thanks Duner).

After you do it, you will feel a lot more of the driveline vibration through your seat, but the vbration will be more of a buzz when you let off the gas, etc. Not a bad shudder like you're getting now.

I've got a similar setup to you all in my Quad. I have not experienced any noticeable vibration. I do get some wheel hop though.

Duner was getting it while pulling a trailer. Apparently, the shifter had a good two inches of rapid travel either way while it was shuddering. Sort of alarming if you think about it....

I know the old Gen II Club Cabs had a 2 piece shaft with a solid mount carrier bearing. Only way to make that shifter move is to break an engine mount. I speak from experience......

I've noticed a slight rattle in 3rd and 4th under a moderate load on occasions, might this be related? (note: it's not in 1st, 2nd, 5th, or reverse)

The sound is almost what you'd expect a wire loosely brushing against the driveshaft to sound like.

My reply :

Take this truck back to the dealership NOW !!
A one year old truck with a little over 7,000 miles should not be doing this no matter how hard it was driven.

Mine had the same symptoms at 30,000, but who's to say it didn't all collect on the plug within the first 7000 miles?

I'm still driving the piss out of mine at 60,500..... just ask my tranny.

Dr. D,

I've thought asking the dealer about it, but I'm
sure they're going to ask "Why did you change
the transmission oil? It doesn't need to be
changed."

I switched to Redline oil but saved the original
oil in case the trans dies I'll be able to refill
with the original oil.

I took a picture of the drain plug before I
cleaned it 'cause I was really shocked how
much crap was stuck to it. My plan is to run it
this winter and change trans fluid next
summer. If the plug is covered again and the
bottom of my drain pan contains a bunch of
brass, I'll try the dealer. I've got the 7/70 power
train warranty so I'm not too worried.

The transmission really works well other than
being a bit noisy and this weird vibration thing
when loaded or when I get on it. I'm really
picky and would be willing to bet most people
wouldn't notice it.

Alex and Duner,

Did you slide the flat bar through the slots in
the rubber, or did you put the flat bar between
the rubber and the outer steel carrier bearing
retainer (the long way)?

Thanks,
Lemmers

I think the graphite is probably brass particles from the snycros. I changed the lube at 18K and had lots of shinny brass looking specs in the bottom of the drain pan.

You stuff it in the slots in the rubber. The slots are what allow the driveshaft to move so far in each direction. This is filling up those slots so that the driveshaft will only move a little, if any. Basically, you want as many pieces of steel as you can fit in the slot AND one hose clamp (open). You will wrap the hose clamp around the metal frame of the mount and then close it as tight as it will go to keep the steel in place (I used some 2.5" hose clamps or soemthing like that). When you close the hose clamp, be sure that the extra banding doesn't touch any of the driveshaft or the rubber boots aroudn the seals. I bent them waaay back out fo the way.

Now, that's totally redneck/backyard technology, but you will be now eligible to join Duner's legendary CRUDE BUT EFFECTIVE RACING team. Hahahahahaaaa.....
