Subject: Need help R&R driveshaft carrier bearing!
IP: Logged

Message:
I am replacing the driveshaft u-joints and carrier bearing in my 1992 Dakota club cab 2WD. The carrier bearing that supports the two piece driveshaft appears to be a press fit. Someone told me that these can be a real bear to replace - they commonly have to be torched off. Has anyone had any experience with this repair? I do have access to a hydraulic press. Any tips you can pass along?

Thanks!

I know some of you guys are stubborn, but if it were mine, I'd take it to a driveline specialty shop. They do these things day in and day out and what takes them 30 minutes would take me 30 days. My time's not very valuable but 30 minutes vs 30 days, it's more valuable than that! ;-)

Don't know about the Dak by my piece of shi.. Chevy was as piece of cake. Just used a sharp blade from a block plane to work under the edge of the flange and worked my way around untill it poped out. The new one I placed a small wood block over the seal and gently taped it untill it was seated.

I am glad to say my Chevy day's are long behind me. To slow!!

Waiting for my 2001 black 4.7 RC Sport 5 speed 3:92 limited slip

Remove the driveshaft and the bearing needs to be pressed off take it to a drive line shop and the'll remove the old and press the new for around 30 bucks, thats what i paid for mine. Take note the round after market bearings come with disks that get pressed on either side of the bearing, the bigger of the 2 diskes should be left off otherwise it will scrap on hard acceleration. The dirveline shop should know this but who knows. actually you could take it anywere with a press.
