Message: boy i'm impressed - had our first snow 8" and i went out to check out my 4X4 . Had pick ups before but they were 2wd which is really one pushing wheel. now i have LSD and part time 4x4 meaning 4 pushing wheels. no problem, climbed over some piled up snow. on hill backed up from dead stop. went some places i figured to get stuck but pulled right thru.... Last week got firewood - drove over hills and fields to the lower hollow, pretty wet. Loaded up the truck with wood and pulled right out. Good old boy with me said "you ain't gonna have no problem, you gotta 4x4 dodge not one of dem chebbies." he was right. It'll be tough not to have a 4x4 on my next truck

Message: I am having a blast in my 4x4 since it snowed 14" last Saturday, I can go through anything I want. This is my first truck and first anything that is rear wheel drive, and I was a little nervious about the snow falling and me not knowing how to drive a truck, but when in doubt I flick it in 4 hi and blast away, this is too fun!!!!

Message: Since getting my 4WD Dak last year and driving in some slippery situations, I'm *very* surprised more vehicles don't come standard with 4 wheel drive of some sort! It's SO much better than just front or rear wheel drive. I have been popping mine into 4WD every chance I get to make up for the summers, when I don't get the chance that often!

Message: Nobody said 4x4 is required to drive in the snow. Especially if you stick to plowed roads. But it is a lot more fun to just mash the gas and go, without worry about spinning, small drifts, or getting moving after stopping on a hill. 4x4 takes most of the stress out of winter driving and lets you have more fun. Whats wrong with that?????

Message: Yeah Bri, before 4x4 entire companies went bankrupt every winter, cause people with 4x2 cars and trucks all got stuck in the snow. Every city North of FLorida shut down from Sept. to March each year. Everyone lived in Key West.

Message: Attention: Retards.
Listen up. This thread was basically about how much BETTER 4WD is on snow than 2WD of any variety. Reread the thread before you go posting stupid stuff like "If you need a 4x4 to drive in the snow, then you don't know how to drive..." Come on. In my case (and the thread starter) this is the first contact with 4X4 either of us has had. And we're impressed with it. So don't come in there and whine about how good your 2WDs are... We KNOW how good they are and can be (last truck was a '96 2WD CC Dak, and before that it was all front WD cars, so I can compare), and we're saying that 4WD is impressively better than 2 WD.
Obviously stopping is the same as any other vehicle (and that IS a problem, I've seen a lot of people way overconfident in their SUVs too).

Message: I have had a Honda Civic for the last 7 winters and never got stuck. Yesterday we had 10" of snow in NY, I drove my Dak 4x4 and felt much more confidence than I did in my Honda. I think the point is if you have a 4x4 and live in the snow belt good for you, you have an advantage over others when moving from light to light and uphill.

Message: ok i started this thread and i always had 2 wd trucks and ran the he!! outa them in the snow. I would have bought another 2wd but i got a good deal on this 4x4 and it does give a sense of confidence. when i had 2 wd or my current 4x4 my problem wasn't sliding of the road or stopping.. it's starting after i catch a light on a hiill or somebody stops/gets stuck in front of me. You use what you got. You don't get on somebodies case because he's got a V8 and he!! , you only need a V6 3.9 to get from here to there.
Shoot you don't need A/C, heat, radio and a bunch of other stuff -- but ya got it so have fun with it ... I am

Message: Up until a 2 years ago all of the Post Office delivery trucks were 2wd outside of Alaska. Now there are a few 4wd Fords showing up but most drivers still take the 2wd trucks given the chance. That's 5-8 hours a day driving slow, pulling off and over the plowed piles, up and down hills, and starting and stopping every 200 feet. We can't chain up the 4wd trucks so the 2wd trucks with chains and positrac go more places. The 2wd trucks also turn much sharper, which really helps with all the crap that ends up blocking the boxes, and on all the u-turns. Your not alone thinking you need a 4x4 in the snow, I bet only about 1 in 100 trucks sold new in my town are 2wd. I specifically bought an awd van for my wife because I didn't think she should have to deal with things like chains. The AWD on the chrysler vans was only an extra $1500 and if anything improves reliability. The trucks with a transfer case cost much more and do have more repairs, they also get most of that initial cost back when selling. I wish they made a AWD Dakota that didn't have a transfer case. That low range crap is for 4 cylinder Toyotas. A torquey V-8 doesn't really ever need that low range gearing. That would improve reliability and reduce cost, weight, and hp loss. To me a 4wd is for off roading, and I don't just mean a dirt road, but NO road. If there is a road a 2wd will go there. If you want better foul weather on road driving, then awd is the way to go. Personally I think if you want to buy a Peterbuilt and drive it around town then that's your choice, I'm just giving you the reasons why I decedeided to finally give up 4x4 after all the previous trucks I've had. It just sucks driving around the other 8 months of the year in a 4x4 knowing you could have all that extra acceleration and handling a 2wd offers. Plus the damn greenies have pretty much shut down any possible off road areas around here, and even the questionable roads are gated now. Might as well just get a Caddy, it will get up anywhere a 4x4 can on the roads that are still open, and they are so smooth on the washboard gravel!

Message: If yuou are spinning your tires, then you need t let off the gas, and yes mail trucks use chains. Put a set of chains on a 2wd and it can go anywhere a 4x4 can and then some in the snow, and probably get back out easier.

Message: There are no mail trucks around where I live, maybe in the cities but not in the rural parts, and not to flame, but they use 4x4's 9 out of 10 times, and they use chains or studded tires because the dirt roads in the summer become ice rinks and snow drifted over fields in the winter. Most 4x2's CAN make it around, but it is a whole lot more work. I would have a 4x2 RT if it wasn't as crappy 7+ months of the year that it is here in northern Michigan, but 4x4's are the vehicle of choice to have here.

Message: I remember sitting behind a 4x4 Montearo last winter at the stop sign for a good 5 minutes while he kept trying to get up the slippery hill after the stop sign. He had standard AT tires that came on a Montero but the surface was that hard packed glossy snow. I was getting ready to get out and push him when he finally slid sideways enough to find some traction on the sholder. The old R/T just motored up to ths same spot, stopped, and pulled easilly out up the hill. No sliding, no chains, just some good snow tires and some sand in the bed. The Montero without a Limited slip was really only turning 2 tires anyway, one front and one back, the R/T turns two in back. If I wanted a serious 4x4 I'd get one of those new Jeep Rubicons, they run about $24,000 here but would out trail even the military spec Humvee.
As far as rural mail carriers go, they drive their own cars so it would be a reflection of all the other cars out there on the road. Many rural carries drive the old city trucks they sell at auction after they get new ones. Even those old postal Jeeps that are pretty common look like a 4x4 CJ but are really all 2wd also. That said if I were a rural carrier in my area I'd get a 4x4, right hand drive, old style cherokee (the post office receintly sold over 5000 of them from Alaska). They get paid by the route not the actual time it takes, so I'd want to save time wherever I could.
