Hi.
I just bought a trailer with electric brakes, My truck is a 2002 Ram 1500. I got the factory installed trailer tow package with the 7 pin connecter like most all dodges come with.
My question is what do I need to pull a trailer with electric brakes. Is there somthing i need to buy from chrysler or aftermarket to run them, or is all of that electronics on the trailer and all i have to do is plug them in.

Shoot,
Down in Texas, we just plug'em in! Use the standard male plug that fits the female on the truck. It should already have it on the trailer. One of them is for the electric brake, coupled with your brakes on the truck already. The dust cap on my Dakota shows a wiring schematic-what's for what.

You need a control box that goes under the dash and reads the amount of brake applied and transmits it to the trailer.

You need to get a brake controller. I would suggest the Tekonsha Prodigy. It is about $50 more that other controllers, but it doesn't need the continual adjustment other controllers need. Also, since you have the factory tow package, you need to get an adapter wire that will go between to controller and the brake controller plug that is under the dash. Installation should be very simple. Good luck.

Use the Tekonsha Prodigy. For another 8 bucks they have the wireing adaptor that plugs directly into the harness under the dash ( no splices). Check E-Bay auction, I've seen them for around 100 bucks without the adaptor. If you got the tow package, it should have come with a wireing harness to plug in under the dash, but you'll have to splice it to whatever controller you get.

So then, you're saying that on my 7prong from DC, if I had traier brakes, electric, that I couldn't just hook it up and work? My sailboat trailer I currently pull needs no brakes.

The 7 prong connector has all the provisions for running electric brakes, but without an electric brake unit installed they're not there. The electric brake unit basically has a pendulem that governs how much brake pressure must be applied, otherwise every time you tap on the brake the trailer's wheels would lock up. And installation is pretty easy.
