Message: The rear pinion drive shaft in my 99 dakota (60K miles) snapped clean into two pieces with no warning while I was driving away from the gas station, so I know what you mean about a material defect in the metal. I did the same thing you did and got the gears from a driveline shop. I have it all back together now, but now I have a horrible howling/whining noise. Any suggestions on how to fix it???

Message: I have done lots of towing with my Dakota since I rebuilt the diff with no problems. I put synthetic diff fluid in with the Friction Modifier and everything seems to be going well and I have about 20K miles on the rebuilt at this point. This summer I towed a 23 foot Toy Hauler trailer weiging about 6800-7200lbs frequently. I made 5 trips of about 230 miles each way. I also tow my boat regularly but it only weighs about 4000lbs. I'm selling now though because my lil Red Dakota complains a little about that heavy trailer. Think I'm getting a Durango with the Hemi.
