 Subject: Truck won't start, isn't battery

Every so often throughout the week, I can't get my truck to start. The batter is fine, I can hear it turning over but it won't fire. If I leave it for a few hours and come back sometimes it will start. It is a 99 quad with the 4.7 liter just over 50k miles. If anyone knows anything or can relate, I would appreciate it.

Just a thought but I had a 68 Dodge Charger that would do the same thing. There was moisture get in the distuber. Blow it out with air and it was fine.

The ignition module in the distributor? I had one go intermittent on me in another vehicle...sometimes it'd just die, then start up again and run fine. I didn't find it until it died altogether. I think that you can get it checked at an auto parts store, if you're so inclined.

chris, first off, in all honesty, if you're going to ask a question and expect help from the members and viewers, atleast wait until 5 moronic posts to call everyone dickheads if you hope for a nice answer. secondly, I would still bring the battery to a test center like sears or anyother place in your area. I'm not sure whether or not they would charge a fee, if you find a small mom and pops place, they may not. That would definately cancel out the possibility of a battery. If you aren't up for that, get up some purpose and find a friend who would be willing to lown you a good battery from his/her vehicle for a couple of minutes. swap it in quickly just to be sure that isn't the problem. Again, all of the previous posts are also correct as water or moisture in the distributor can cause a problem like you've described.

It could be your pick up unit in the the distributor or crank sensor. The same thing happend to mine a while back.

Had a similiar, it was a hairline crack in the coil allowing moisture to enter

It turned out to be a bad cam sensor, was replaced with a newer model, and truck is peppier now. Lol

Sears will charge you 9.99 to go over the whole entire charging and starting system. including the battery. And if by any chance you live in the burnsville minnesota area stop in and ask for cory and I'll test it for you for free.

i have only had my dodge a few months now but if it is a 99 is there still a distributer in it i thought stuff that new all had coil packs let me know if anyone knows different

Hey,
I have a 2000 dak that wouldn't start this AM. I ended up taking my 03 Durango instead but it is raining here and I was thinking it could be because of that. It has been hesitant to start in the rain, usually only taking a few extra seconds to fire, but this morning it kept repeatedly trying to turn over, but no connection. Right now it's sitting in my driveway and i'm a little annoyed with it. Gonna wait for it to dry out and see if it will start then. Think it's moisture getting into somewhere that it shouldn't be? Where??

there is a module and a pick up relay in the distributer as a couple of people mentioned in previouse posts. you should change them both. this happened to me before that was the problem. not to expensive maybe 100.00.

I had the exact same prob in my '97 3.9 V6--every once in a while it just would not even try to crank, but a little later maybe it would. I though it was the battery and it wasn't. It turns out the starter relay was bad. I had it done at my shop since i couldn't figure out what it was. It was like 92 bucks after tax, labor and all.
