Subject: Squeeling sound when cold IP: Logged
Message: My quad 4.7, 5spd has been making a really
loud squeeling sound upon cold start up now
that it's below 20º here in Wisconsin. It
sounds like a belt squeeling and it's really
loud. It doesn't do it at idle but will at anything
rpm above idle and will continue to squeel for
2 or 3 minutes.
I think it's the fan clutch. I sprayed some
penetrating oil between the nut that holds the
fan on the water pump and the fan itself and it
was quiet this morning (although my garage
was 40º), we'll see. I might just remove the
clutch fan if it continues to test my theory.
Also, it made a similar squeeling sound, but
only for a second or two, when I shut the
engine down last spring. It went away after
several days.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Lemmers

Message: My 02 DAK Quad SLT 3.9 Auto squeals when it's cold (around freezing)for a few minutes too. Sounds like a bearing but can't tell where from - fan, alternator, tensioner? Some days it doesn't do it at all, even if it is below freezing - which is why I haven't taken it in for warranty work. Occasionally it takes a few minutes driving in the cold air to start to whine.
Very annoying!

Message: I'm going to take a guess here and say it's the belt. Mine did it too before I moved, and it always sounded like a belt squealing. I decided that since the belt was cold, it wasn't 'bending' around the pulleys as well as it did when warm, so it slipped a bit. Once it warmed up, the sound went away.

Message: Yeah, good ol' Wisconsin weather has mine squealing as well. Although, I don't believe it's a belt because it sounds more like a mechanical squeal than anything else. It kind of sounds like those loud timing gears I've heard on muscle cars.

Message: My 02 QC, 4.7, auto also has a squeal when cold (below 35 deg). It occurs between 2K-3K RPMs and lasts for about 1-2 miles. I originally thought it was the belt, but it really seems to have a metallic sound to it - like a bad bearing. Unfortunately, it seems to be more intermittent this winter than last winter. No sense taking it to the dealer until I can guarantee the problem will repeat.

Message: My 99 5.2 has been doing the same thing. Squeals when it's cold, and stops after it has warmed up. Bought a new belt, but I'm not about to put it on when it's 15 degrees out.

Message: My 02 dakota with a 4.7 had a squeel when cold last year when I got it. Its not doing it this year yet.Someone on this forum last year had the same problem and had there alternator replaced and that solved the problem. If your truck is under warrantee you should have it checked.

Message: UPDATE:
Well, after sitting outside all day yesterday the
truck started good but was squealing again. I
decided to drive to the dealer, which is less
than a mile from work. Wouldn't you know it,
as soon as I parked at the dealer the sound
disappeared.
After I got home, I took a closer look at the
clutch fan ‘cause I still think it’s what’s
squealing. Anyway, the fan on my truck
seems to have a good deal of slop/play in the
bearing. The clutch part of the fan moves
about 1/16” when I move the fan forward and
back. This seems excessive to me, you can
really wobble it around. My brother’s ‘95 Sport
with a 5.2 has no play in the clutch fan bearing
at all when compared to mine.
It would be great if someone following this
post could check their fan clutch for play. I’d
like to know if this is considered “normal”
before heading to the dealer. Sorry for the
long post.
Thanks,
Lemmers

Finally got around to bringing my '02 3.9 Auto QC in for warranty work - turns out Lemmers was right...it was the fan clutch that was temperature (around freezing) sensitive. So nice not to hear that worn bearing sound!!!

Message: Lemmers,
I'll go in my garage, when I get home with my truck,
and get my fan/clutch assembly OFF THE SHELF IN MY GARAGE, and see if it has any play! Wouldn't much matter anyway, seeing as it now occupies a space on a shelf in my garage.
Greg, you can still dump that 6 for a real engine.
A new QC, with a v6? Someone will be gullible enough to buy it, or better yet, just trade it in!

Message: wow im glad im not the only one hearing that squealing sound when its cold out. i guess its just the way they make these engines. i went to start up my 5.9 r/t yesterday before the big snow storm came and i heard the squealing sound for the first 2 minutes or so but then it went away. it doesnt always happen, just once in a while. maybe ill try taking off my clutch fan while its still cold out.

Message: My wife's '98 Durango squeals like that when we get any moisture in the air for an extended period.
Southern Arizona doesn't get real cold like that for very long.
OTOH, Sometimes just tightening the tension will resolve it.

sound never came back. The funny thing is
the new clutch has almost as much play as
the old. Oh well, at least it's quiet.
