Subject: Help w/ curves in fiberglass please... IP: Logged
Message: I am about to try and construct a fiberglass console for my 2000 RC/5-speed Dak, and after looking at some of the consoles on places like socalcustoms.com, I was wondering how the hell these guys get those wild complex curves on their consoles and door panels,etc... It seems like you would build the frame with mdf board and then use maybe aluminum foil or something to do curves? I have seen that curveable wood on selectproducts.com, but some of those curves look impossible. Any help is greatly appreciated, and sorry for the long post....

Message: Alot of custom, one-off fibrerglass pieces are made by using a "buck" carved out of styrafoam.
Carve the shape, lay the glass over it to the desired thickness. When it's cured, turn it over and use acetone to melt out the "buck". Smooth it up for painting or cover it as is with carpet.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Message: A lot of people will make a frame with mdf and then stretch a soft cloth like a thin fleece over it. Then you brush on and saturate the cloth with the fiberglass resin, when that has hardened a little, then you can lay the glass over that. Haven't tried that yet, but i have researched it a lot. Hope that helps.
Everyone with an 88-96 dak needs to get in on the custom gauge group buy. We only need 13 more. www.speedhut.com

Message: Hey, try searching around this site some.

It may sound strange, but these guys are always building boats out of fiber glass so they always have a thread about it.

Message: Use plaster to coat the foam you carve then lay the fiberglass over it. I have built body panels this way before. If you want it strong be sure to use the proper mixture of resin and hardner. Also use the chipped fiberglass if possible and not the big woven matt.
Good Luck.
