I just purchased a 97 Dakota Sport V6 Auto
and love it. However after the fact I noticed that
there is no place to hook tie-down straps for
carrying my motorcycles. There is a couple of
pieces in the rear of the bed, but no stake
holes, or hook points at the front.

What do you all do?

You will notice that there are tie down points in the floor of the bed. Unfortunatly they do not work very well as tie down points for motorcycles, they also tend to clog with dirt and debris. What I did was to buy some aftermarket chrome tie down points, and drilled the side rails of the bed. If you go this route use as large as possible backing washers so the hooks don't pull through the metal of the bed rail. I have been using this setup for 6 years now and have hauled by bike(s) hundreds of times. The added bonus for this type of setup is that that the wider placement of the eyelets on the rails provides much more lateral stability than the stock bed tie down points.

RS, Thanks for the info. I had seen the
plugs, but thought they were drains for the
bed. Seems like an awkward place for tie
down points?

Thanks again,

My '02 Dak came with the under the rail bed liner which had holes for tiedown loops. Needless to say these were difficult to get at. I fixed the problem by picking up some carabiners at a local climbing gear store and attached them to the tiedowns. With the 'biners in place tying stuff down is much easier. Word of caution, don't use those 'keychain' 'biners, get some real climbing gear, then you can securely tie anything down without worrying about the 'biner disintegrating.

the 'bullyclamp',

nice website, I wish everyone explained their product this well!

It seems as though a heavy load such as a larger motorcycle, under lateral loads, would bend the rail up some.

My 01 QC, came with tie down points inside the four corners of the bed. I started with a drop in liner, and had to attach loops of line to tie to for easier access. I now have a spray in and they're easy to get to.

I guess maybe these bullyclamps do work well though. They should get an award for their website!

If you decide to get the Bully Clamps, do as I did. On the inside of the pinch weld I placed a piece 3/16" x 1" flat bar about 8" long. It will displace the load over a larger area, avoiding bending of the bed flange. They are pricey, but if you ever priced having a body shop weld up holes and repaint the box, it's money well spent. Just my .02
