Subject: Spark plugs...A highly debated issue IP: Logged
Message: I've searched this site time and time again on spark plugs for the 2000 4.7L and it seems like everybody has a different opinion on what to use. Now you guys might have modded this engine in one way or another and it requires a slightly differnt plug but for a stock 4.7L, no mods, why do most seems to like the Autolite's 3923's??? Why would you want to put a FORD plug in your Dodge? I've always seen Autolite's as Ford plugs and AC's as GM plugs...Correct me if I'm wrong. I have 41,000 on my 2000 Dak 4.7L and need a spark plug change but I don't want to void my extended warranty by putting AutoLite's in replace of Champions. Especially if I bring it to the dealer to get it done and I hand them a pack of AutoLites and say, "here, put these things in". Is that going to void it? Are these Autolite's working on a different heat range than the stock Champ's??? Thanks for the help.

Message: Autolite is owned by Honeywell not Ford

Message: Greeno, Dakota Dan is correct. Autolite is owned by Honeywell. In 1961, Ford bought the Autolite battery and sparkplug division and folded it into Ford's corporate hierarchy. In 1974 Ford was forced, due to anti trust issues, to divest the Autolite holdings. In comes Allied Signal, the principal owner of Autolite until the Honeywell-Allied signal merger.
Secondly, using Autolite ignition engineered sparkplugs will NOT void the warranty. I refer to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1974 as proof that an automaker cannot force you to use their own parts in order to maintain the warranty.
THird, Autolite has a fine tradition of manufacturing high quality sparkplugs for all internal combustion engines. They are indeed a dedicated group of professionals working diligently to provide you with the finest sparkplug money can buy.
Fourth, take it from me, Harlow Wilcox, user and ardent proponent of these fine sparkplugs; nowhere else will you find a better longer lasting sparkplug. Tis time for you my friend to replace those worn out Champions and make the leap ahead with Autolite under your hood. Join the thousands of motorists, myself included, who can rest easy knowing their motor will perform brilliantly during these cold winter months. Smile contendedly when you notice how much more pep and performance you are able to wring from your automobile. Wave a friendly wave when you pass your neighborhood service station as you experience greater fuel economy.
Make the switch today won't you? Just hurry down to your Autolite dealer and ask for Autolite sparkplugs by name!
And remember, from bumper to tailight, you are always right with Autolite!
Good night!

Message: Green,
I was wondering the same thing as you. I have Champions in my 5.2 with no problem but I see all the rave reviews about the Autolites which makes you wonder. I think I will reuse the Champions and take the attitude "if it aint broke, dont fix it". However, I may try the Autolites cause they are cheap and then make a decision which is the best. I guess your out 1 hr labor and 10$ to find out.....I have 47k on my 99.

Message: Hey Harlow
good to hear from ya
as a fleet mechanic for over 20 years i've used many different spark plugs, but i find that autolite seems to work the best. I also use them in my daks but i stay with correct heat range and i use platinum tip plugs
I always say use what ever parts that u want

Message: Its real simple....if you are running your Dak at stock temperature (i.e. 190 degree thermostat) run the 5224. If you are running your Dak at the proposed optimal performance temperature of 180 degree (Robertshaw 180, part number GT-755(?) from AutoZone) then run the cooler plug, 3923.
Platinums for the above heat ranges is also good, I have not seen any performance increases with the platinums, so I don't waste my money on them.
p.s. How you doing Harlow...have a great Thanksgiving!

Message: Whatever you do, don't use platinum.I have the same year and size engine and put platinum because they last longer, but I found out my dak didn't like them and what I mean by that is that right after I put the plugs, the truck started to drive rough and erratic idle when cold. I put 3923's because of these posts and they work good. I could not tell you the difference over the champions(originals) I took out because I bought the vehicle with 23,000 miles and replaced them right away, but champions felt just normal.
P.S. If you still wanna go with platinum, let me know and I sell you mine. I only used them for three days. half the price you are going to pay for new!!

Message: Thanks for the input. at least i know if I go to Autolites I'll go with the #5224 and stay in the heat range. I haven't screwed with the temp range or anything. There is probably going to be not much difference between the Champs and Autolites, but everybody has their own preference.

Message: Platnium DOES NOT = MORE PERFORMANCE
Platnium DOES = LONGER PLUG LIFE
Fine wire Platnium plugs and fine wire Irdium plugs can equal more performance.
Platnium plugs have a much broader heat range then conventional plugs so under some conditions they may very well idle a bit rougher but this same flexability is also what allows them to be self cleaning. The only brand of spark plug that would always foul in my old Ford Tempo were AutoLite Platniums. I tried Bosch and they would not foul at all and I tried Denso and NGK and they also did not foul. I have used mostly AC/Delco and Champion plugs when useing conventional plugs here in the United States and Bosch when useing platnium. In Germany I used mostly Bosch, Denso and NGK.I have never realy experinced any significant difference's in performance other then the negative experince with Autolite's.
