Subject: Front wheel bearings. IP: Logged
Message: Hi, on my 97 dakota 4x4, the front driver side wheel started making schreeching noises!...i took it to the dealer and they said it needs a new hub/bearing. I dont see why the bearings cant be replaced out of the hub i have right now....does anyone know of aftermarket companys that make bearings for it? or sell a hub/bearing assembly for cheaper than oem parts. thanks.

Message: Well in the old days when Timken bearings ruled the earth you simply replaced the race and bearing and motored on. You sould usualy spend $9-$40 per-bearing $3 per-seal and $1 for grease per-wheel. Now they have made the hub and bearing one intergrated assembly that is sealed. They typicaly last 60,000-80,000 before they are bad.I removed a set of timken bearings from my Toyota that were 16 years old. They were still good I just changed them because I had a set of bearing sitting in my spare parts bin for 5 years and was tired of looking at them. I used to repack them every 24,000 the first 10 years after that I started repacking every other year. I used moly-fortified grease and that was it. Now these new sealed bearing wear out like crazy are very expesive and do nothing to enhance performance, durability or value. I am sure that you should be able to pick these up on the agter market from TRW, MOOG, Fedral, Timken.......

Message: I was able to find replacement bearings for $40.00/side @ Advance Auto. The trick with bearings is to find the number, in this case like sandman suggested Timken, and make your parts guy look it up in the book. Anyway, I took hub assembly to Napa to have them pressed out, and new one's pressed back in. Worked fine for a week, then the drivers side started making noise, almost a thumping sound. So now I have a $40.00 bearing in old hub on pass, and a new hub assembly on drivers side. Hope this helps

Message: Ah the good ole' days. You could fix anything yourself without any trouble. Pack some new grease in and set the points with a matchbox. I sure miss those days.

Message: pbxr: You mean to tell me that you had the old ones pressed out and some new ones instaled.....is that so.... Well from what I understand is that they are all one pice and have to be replaced with the whole hub and bearing assembley, and that the old bearings cant be presses out, we tried and it dosnt work. Anyhow let me know more on what you did. My driver side is clunking and about to go,
Jesse
