Subject: rear anti-lock only?
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone know if it would be possible to put four-wheel anti-lock breaks on our trucks? I drive a little 1998 s-10 at work that has four-wheel anti-lock, and I like that feature, even though the rest of the truck is crap. Only having rear anti-lock just does'nt do it. If both rear wheels lock up, the system thinks all is well, It only works if one of the rear wheels locks up, so what's the good in having only rear anti-lock? What do you guys (or gals) think?

It is an available feature but if you don't get the feature when your truck is being built then you can't get it. The CABS changes and additional wheel sensors are required not to mention additional electrical harnesses.

What purpose did Dodge intend by making the rear brakes anti-lock. If the other wheels lock up you would be in trouble anyway??? Is there an upgrade to get 4 wheel anti-lock? Or at least disc brakes in the rear? The drum brakes even with ABS lock up and the truck slides. I would at least want to have some comfort in knowing I have disc brakes in the rear to get me stopping.

I think they use drums because they perform better under extreme weight like towing. For sports purpouses 4 wheel disc would be the way to go that's for sure.

The RW ABS is still usefull for it will prevent your ass end from passing you stomp on the breaks. 4 wheel disc also costs more and DC has become cheap.

4 wheel abs is also not ideal in many off-road situations. A non-ABS car can stop just as well or better then an identical car with ABS it just takes a better driver, and a non-panic situation. The rear drums show their bad side if you are autocrossing on a long track, or trying to hold a load back going down a steep grade using the brakes. They are more prone to fade. The good thing is they are lighter then the discs and every 10 pounds of unsprung weight, is equal to 100 pounds of sprung weight and good for an extra .1 in the 1/4 mile. All that said I'd prefer big shiny discs out back if for nothing else then the visual impact.

My guess is that the rear of the truck is lighter (when not loaded) and thus it's
more likely to lose grip under braking as the weight transfers to the front under
braking (nose dive). Thus rear ABS only. Of course 4 wheel discs and ABS all
around would be bett

Iv'e recently ordered a 2002 Dakota and for 48.00 bucks you can upgrade the payload rating from 1450lbs to 1950lbs (of course the dealer didn't know what this option was), so after poking my nose around I found out that they give you 11x2 rear drums instaed of the standard 9x2.5 drums. Just thought I'd pass on the info.

Many references to abs, larger drum size, etc... has anyone thought to transplant a break system from a Viper (shares the same crazy 6X4.5 bolt pattern)? I wonder how that would perform

The reason behind rear anti-lock only is that the front would cost money and (from my experience w/ trucks) the rear wheels ALWAYS lock up much earlier than the front.

When the front wheels lock you go in a straight line, when the rear lock you can get turned with little control.
