Message: I've owned my dakota 5.2 auto 4x4 since last february...and in the colder months even when I remote start it and let it run for 10 minutes the tranny doesn't always kick into gear...so I have to put it back in park and shift into drive at least once if not more...and when it finally decides to kick in it really kicks hard...any ideas on what's goin' on? solenoids freezin' up?

Message: First thing I would check out is if the linkages (manual and throttle valve) are properly adjusted. Is fluid clean and topped off? When was it changed last?

Message: CJ,
I'll second the question - how's the fluid? I've moved to synthetic fluid in all my vehicles and highly recommend a synthetic ATF - especially in the cold. It's hard to explain, but once you get to the point that you have to listen for a shift point you'll understand. :-)
Pull the dipstick and get some fluid on a white rag or paper towel. It it's not bright and clear I'd flush and refill, making sure to drop the pan and replace the filter. Any burned smell or rustcolor, dark red, or brown means the fluid has lost that lubin' feeling and needs a trip to the recycler.
Good luck,
Andy
