what do you all think the paint warrenty should be on these trucks? I have a 91 with 98,000 on it and the paint on the hood and roof is pealing. It has never been in an accident and never been repainted. I think that as long as its not over 15yrs old that and has long as it has never been in an accident then it should be warrentied. what do you guys think sorry had to vent

I think that if you don't like the sound of laughter, don't bring this up at your dealer.

The late 80's and early 90's were notorious for peeling paint due to EPA-mandated changes in paint. Blue and Silver were especially bad colors for the peeling-paint syndrome. I had an '89 GMC that was 2-tone, light blue and silver (DOH!). The blue held up well, but the silver started peeling around '96 or so.

You can ask, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a positive answer. My $.02 worth.

That was during the PPG Uniprime craze. The big 3 were talked into using this amazing new primer that failed repeatedly. I had a Chev repainted by a dealer for free, never told them I bought it used, they painted it. Try talking to the local dealer.

I think they should last as long as the body of the vehical lasts or until it begins to rust. I have checked at two local dealers and one said they wont warrenty paint the other just said no any other ideas would be nice

So should all of the plastic trim and rubber pieces and the radio and the dash and the door panels and the engine and the tranny and the brakes and the radiator and tires and lights and the carpet and the floor mats and the etc...all last for ever too , or just the paint? Your truck is 12YRS. OLD and so is the paint that has been through all of the abuse mother nature can dish out. Yes Dodge (and the other two) had paint peeling problems that were no fault of the owners , but the thought of expecting them to do ANYTHING after 12 YRS is insane!
Sorry , just had to vent too.

My 99' had the clear coat peeling the day I bought it in April of 2001. That with only 27,000 miles. Went back to the dealer after never getting a response on the issue and they said that it was a factory defect and they would fix it. Then they asked how many miles--38000. No dice. Over 36000 miles you're screwed. All that because they never got back to me. Even went to Chrysler and they were going to get it fixed too, until they heard the mileage.

My Uncle had a chevy that was way out of its warrenty and he nagged on them and they finally warrentied it. Scott you need to relize that this was the year that they changed the formula of the paint. The paint is not peeling down to bare metal it is peeling off of the primer that they put on. If the vehical is not preped right even after putting the primer on it it will peel at some point in its life wether its 3 days or 12yrs. This problem with my paint has been going on for some time but i didnt think to warrenty it until this year when somebody said something about it. THanks

I paint cars for a living , and have been doing so for over 12 yrs. , so I am very familiar with the problem you are having. I started in this line of work at a GM dealer , right at the height of the famous peeling problems the big 3 were having. I can understand where you are coming from because the problem was a factory problem from the very beginning , but the can`t warranty things forever. Could you imagine what the cost of a new truck would be? Someone would have to pay and it wouldn`t be the maker of the veh. , it would be the consumer...you and me.

I realize that if they did warrenty things forever that we would pay for it in the price of a new vehical. But if the factory knew it was a problem then they should paint it no questions asked. But back to the warrenties they should at least warrenty the the paint for 15yrs.

That`s your opinion and you are entitled to it...but I think that`s crazy to expect ANYTHING to be warrantied for 15 yrs. I would be happy if I were you , that the truck isn`t rusted out all over, and apparently , it still runs good.

All of the big three manufacturer's had the problem during those years. I have a 91 in white. I consider myself lucky to have only had peeling along the edge of the hood and above the upper right corner of my windield. Every Dakota from our era I see has the same or worse. Don't hold your breath for warranty .. they didn't even warranty the driveline problems from that year.

I can't believe people are complaining about the paint on a truck that is 15 years old. Okay so it was a known problem back when the trucks were “somewhat” new, lets just say in 94. That is ten years ago. What the hell is the blue book value of a 91 dakota? I can’t see it being much more than $2000. I mean come on your truck is a piece of junk, it isn’t a classic car, and it isn’t a nice new Dakota, it is a 15 year old pile of metal. You can’t complain about anything when you have been driving something that is 15 years old, you should feel lucky it still gets you from point a to point be. And I was thinking my 02 with 59k miles had a lot of seat time.

Since were voicing opinions, here's mine regarding the paint issue.
" Dodge F***in Sucks"
My Black 98 Dakota made it three years before the paint started to fail misserably but since I had exceeded the 36k warranty Dodge said too bad!
I have contacted the local dealers several times, sent several e-mails to the corporate office and they all say the same thing. I exceeded the warranty therefore Dodge will take no action on repairing my Truck.
Keep in mind this is a 98 not 15yr old truck. Cmon guys, am I out of line to expect a major automobile manf to paint a vehicle to last more than 3 years. I have a 35 year old VW with original paint that looks as good if not better.
The worst part of this whole thing is that I really like the new Dodge products coming down the line, but I will never buy a Dodge product again!
My .02!

Netminder,
Cry me a river, I am sick of all the cry babies on here. Why your truck only had a 30,000 mile warranty I don't know, that is your fault. And I am sure that you must have taken really great care of your truck in order for the paint to "fail miserably." (read sentence sarcastically) As long as we are voicing our opinions, I HAT CRYBABIES.

I have a '93 Dakota club cab with the good ol' peelin' paint sydrome. I don't want money. I just wanna know, what's a fair estimate to get it re-done? Is the problem with the paint, the primer or both? Does it need to be re-done down to the metal?

i had to have both my doors painted after someone tried to steal it. 2 years later the the clearcoat is peeling where the door meets the window and just in the seam of the mirrors. Lazy dodge just taped instead of removing the trim and mirrors. My insurance company (manitoba public insurance) sent in a quality insurance guy who says they are goin after dodge to have this repair done right. Lucky me so far. Funny though when the looked at my vehicle he placed my file on the roof of his car and after the assessment just drove away, must've been embaressing when his superviser had to call and explain how he did this "homer" move just in case someone picked it up and said look what i found, thank God for computers.

One. forget asking a dealer if theyll repaint it theres no way in he!! they will and youll end up looking like an ass. Second. if you do get it repainted dont go cheap. The paint and primer need to be stripped if you want the new paint job to last. Some places will let you do the prep work yourself, some wont you have to ask. third. expect to pay 2,000 to 2,500 for a decent paint job that will hold up for awhile, If its in the kind of condition that its worth the $$ to do then go ahead, if not screw step two and get a $500 Maco cheapy paint job that will look ok for about three years or until you sell it.
