My 99 3.9 knocks and seems to have lost power. I am interested in learning more about this belly pan I keep hearing about on this board. Stupid question, but what and where is this? Is this gasket something hard to fix? Thanks!

Matt

There is a simple check for the belly pan gasket, remove your throttle body airhat and shine a flashlight down into the intake (you'll have to hold the butterflies open, do -NOT- have the engine running!). If you see any oil down in there, chances are it's a bad belly pan gasket.

The intake on the Magnums (except for the 4.7) are two-piece units, with the bottom piece being the 'belly pan'. The gasket goes between the two pieces.

If you have the tools and have done some mechanic work before, it is not too bad. Check all posts on belly pan. Be sure to use new bolts, real important for right torque. Try to use the new style Mopar gasket or one from a Fel-Pro kit. Follow the torqueing sequence for the belly pan and the intake manifold. Don't just torque the belly pan bolts down. Follow instructions to the letter. Need any additional help; post, we will try to help. Some good mechanics here,(not me).

Thanks for all your help so far. I looked at the situation this morning. How much oil would I expect to see? The inside walls of the intake appear to have a very small bit of carbon as well as a slight oil color, but certianlly not wet with oil. It looks like it could just be a discoloration of the metal. Is this what I would expect to see with a failed belly pan seal? Thanks again!
