Subject: ABS/ brake light & engine dies at stops IP: Logged
Message: I am having trouble on my 99 dakota. Both the ABS and brake warning lights stay on. The speedometer only works above about 30mph. I am going to change the sensor in the differential this weekend and based on the responses on the board, it will be an easy fix. However, on my way to work this afternoon, my truck died 3 times when I was stopping. What causes this? Is it related to the speed sensor? Thanks anyone.

Message: Is this a dealer only part? I have called most parts stores in the area. They only have the speed sensor labeled "output side." They describe it as a totally different sensor which threads into it's port, instead of pressing into the differential and bolting into place.
If this can be located at autozone, etc., does anyone have a part number? Thanks again!

Message: It controls the idle speed of the engine somehow. The dealer is cheaper than AutoZone or any of the others (SHOCK). I bought one from the parts store and they sent me home with the wrong one. My 99 is a stick and it would die at the lights too. Trust me, it's the speed sensor.
Sorry, already threw the box away, so I dont have any part #'s. A good parts dept man can lay his hands right on it without looking it up.

Message: I just replaced the speed sensor in my 94 dak a couple of weeks ago. When it went out the speedometer and over drive went out and the check engine light came on. Pretty easy to replace go the part at dodge dealer for $50.

Message: My son has a 99, that recently started dieing whenever you slow down(if you dont keep your foot on the accelerator). He left his lights on and run the battery down prior to this, and after recharging the battery, the dieing suddenly started. We left the battery unhooked overnight, thinking the computer would have to relearn the idle settings. But, after 5 days of daily driving, it hasnt happened. It still dies when slowing down or clutching(its a 5 speed). Do you think the speed sensor could be the culprit, and if so, is it just coincedental that it went out the same time the battery ran down?
thanks,

Message: Do you have your abs / brake lights on? My 99dakota with 5.2 and 5 speed manual crapped out all the time while slowing down using the gears. I replaced the sensor and it solved the problem. I would say it is cheap enough and very easy (10 minutes) to replace, so why not try that first.
